Pros: The Infinifilm format of this movie provides for the first real competition to the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD formats.
Cons: The movie is, for the most part, far too intellectual for itself, considering it was marketed as a kids/family movie.
The Last Mimzy is an example of a movie that was not only poorly marketed, but was also far too intellectual for itself and its audiences. And even though it was too intellectual and poorly marketed, there was one factor that made it at least somewha...t worthwhile. When this movie first came to theaters, it was marketed primarily as a family/kids movie. But the only thing that really makes it a family/kids movie is that it uses the old cliche'd adage that children are the future. It was two kids who saved the world. Therein lies the primary message. And while that is a rather cliche'd message, it is overshadowed by some topics that would fly right over the heads of the average child and adult audiences. The topics in question include the likes of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence, time travel, wormholes, and the quantum mechanics involved therein, and even Far Eastern philosophy and spirituality. The bonus features of the DVD go into even more depth about each of these topics for thsoe who might be interested. But these discussions somehow become the main topics of the movie. The problem with this is how they are tied together. It felt as if they were very loosely assembled. Yes this movie is a sci-fi film. But because of these topics, this movie really should have been written for adult audiences who perhaps could grasp these concepts, rather than kids. On the upside, though, perhaps it will be just enough to get young audiences interested in science. That would be a good thing. Now, on to the one major positive to this movie. Currently, there are various forms of DVD out there, including HD-DVD, BluRay DVD, and standard format DVD. Now, with this movie, audiences see the introduction of what is known as Infinifilm. Basically infinifilm lets viewers watch special features during the movie itself. Pop-up elements appear for audiences to click on, so as to watch extras, then go back to the movie right where they left off. In reality, this is not that original. This exact feature was made available on the most recent seasons of The Simpsons box sets. What makes it so positive is the economic impact of the format. Putting so much into a single disc makes Infinifilm a very feasable competitor to both HD-DVD and BluRay, espeically since audiences won't have to go and buy the overpriced equipment required to watch Infinifilm format DVD's. It can also compete with the current standard DVD format. This is the case because whenever a movie comes from theaters, to DVD, consumers are forced to decide between a single and double disc format. Those who want the extra features have to pay for more than they would for the single disc format. This is not fair. What if people want to see the bonus features, but can't afford to buy the DVD with bonus features? The answer lies in Infinifilm. It is an enjoyable, economic means of letting people get the full movie experience without having to pay exorbitant amounts of money for special DVD's and their players or even the multi-disc verson of standard dvd formats. So to that end, this is at least a somewhat worthwhile movie to rent, if not buy. Read more Less
