Pros: The screenwiter, director, actors and the technology at the time.
Cons: The availability of the film on DVD, 45 years after production!
This is my all time favorite horror film! With less han one minute of violence, no blood and gore and very few special effects, hey it was made in 1961, they acomplished a timeless HORROR / TERROR CLASSIC!
The script written with only a possible outline or idea from the novel, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, Nelson Gidding was inspired to create a story that needed none of what all horror films use today in great abundance, violence, blood and gore and special effects from the begining thought to the ending credits.
Even the remake of The Haunting with all the current trappings previously mentioned could not stand up to the original.
The "combination of talent" was one of the rare events to occur in the history of movie making. This combination which brought to life an altimate Horror / Terror Classic is what inspires others to continue to reach out beyond the norm to create a movie like THE HAUNTING!
This is a wonderful, clasic ghost story from the wonderful Shirley Jackson novel. The movie catches the terror and the personalities involved with the "Haunting" and is a great Jullie Harris movies as well. She is truly "haunting" in her portrayal of the doomed heroine of the story. Supurbly filmed and light years beyond the milk-toast remake. It goes in my film/DVD library. A good, scary ghost story that makes one think as well as raises the goose bumps. To watched alone, on a dark, quiet night.
The 1963 version of The Haunting is so superior to the late Nineties remake that mentioning the latter in the same sentence as the original is criminal. Robert Wise, one of Hollywood's most versatile directors (He also gave us The Day the Earth Stood Still, West Side Story, and The Sound of Music), has made a masterpiece. This is the thinking person's Bump-in-the-Night movie. Nary a ghost is to be seen; nearly everything of a frightening nature in this movie is implied with deliciously terrifying results. A first rate cast is aided by some excellent camerawork that only intensifies the deadly nature of Hill House, where four people perform an experiment in psychic research.
This movie tops my three favorite list of ghost stories, followed by The Uninvited and The Others. Watch it once and you'll understand why it continually wins over fright lovers in each new generation of moviegoers.
Love the b&w impact of scary movies, don't you? After I first saw it, I was scared to let my hand hang off the edge of my bed - anyone feel like that too?? And the banging and door bending inwards - I can't wait to hear the sound effects on the DVD!! I only have it on vhs, so this will be an experience! Definitely heed the previous advice - don't watch alone! But if you are alone, watch it in the daytime first, then ask a pal to join you the next time in the evening, in the dark, where it's very dark...got goosebumps yet, hmmmm?! HA! Gotcha!! Let your imagination run with the cold spots in the hallway, the spiral staircase, the creepy statues that seem lifelike, but I don't want to give away the ENTIRE movie - buy it! You won't regret it. Signed, Twisted Sister
I saw this movie after I saw the release of it in theaters in 1999. I did not like the recent one very much. It was okay. The original one is the best one to see I think. Black and White movies seem to add that eerie feeling to them. They also don't add tons of special effects either that can ruin a movie. The 1963 version gets you thinking. It is makes you use your mind to imagine what it is that is happening. Now adays we really can't do that anymore with all the blood, gore, and special effects that have taken over the movies.
Without a doubt the finest horror film ever made. No sleezy special effects,or disapointing Blood&Guts, it,s what you don't see that gets under your skin. Not to mention top-notch performances from the actors,first-rate direction, and a great script taken from a great story.Everything comes together in this film and a classic has been created. So do your-self a faver and buy it today.Thank-you Robert Wise.
This is what a horror movie should be. Filmed in glorious B&W, this is the thinking person's haunted house flick. Made in 1963, it is thankfully void of all the special effects that have helped make movie audiences lose their ability to use their imaginations. To say more would be unfair, but be warned: Don't watch this while you're alone. Tops my list for best ghost/haunted house movie, along with Lady in White and The Uninvited. This was remade in 1999; don't waste your time, it's another worthless remake.
I thought this movie was the scariest movie ever! I did not want to go to sleep after I saw it the first time. I loved how it didn't show the ghost. It just totally added to the mystery and suspense. This is one of my favorite movies. It is definetly a movie to watch over and over.
I thought the haunting was the best movie ever i would see it again and again.
not just any ghost story... the ghost story. This is by far the best horror film ever made. the new version pales in comparison to the first. however at times Eleanor's constant conversations with her self get annoying but that is the only drawback. The only movie worth seeing again and again. Don't watch alone.
The Haunting is Robert Wise's brilliant realization of Shirley Jackson's classic horror story. Subtle and scary, the terror lies in what you can't see and the cast all give great performances. Forget the remake and don't miss this one.
