VAL KILMER WAS THE BEST IMITATION OF JIM MORRISON OF THE MARVELOUS BAND, THE DOORS. IT'S HIS ACTUAL VOICE. HE LOOKS AND SOUNDS LIKE MORRISON. I ENJOYED "THE DOORS" AS A YUMMY MOVIE.

The poet and the rock star

    >Kilmer is superb, Ryan is superb, a great
    >movie to see, but mostly if you are a fan
    >of Classic Rock, especially late 60's. It
    >is entertaining, and ya know, if I wanted to
    >watch a factual documentary this is not it,
    >if I wanted to see a rock documentary I would
    >watch one on VH-1. I am not sure if they
    >show documentaries on The Doors, or Jefferson
    >Airplane. Oliver Stone gives Morrison a break
    >now and then, but the young man's redeeming >characteristics are his lyrical creativity >and his power over his band mates and Pamela
    >Morrison. His Dionysian traits are what gets >him in trouble everywhere. In every way a free
    >spirit, Jim Morrison must be given credit for >his energy and talent for motivating a crowd,
    >and ya know, The Doors were one of few groups
    >of The Americas who were immensely popular,
    >as much so as The Who, The Beatles, and The
    >Rolling Stones. Whether "The Doors" is
    >accurate or honest about Jim Morrison, it is
    >highly charged, and for rocker.

A Shame This Movie Was Even Made

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 21, 2002 | 1 out of 1 found this The Doors (1991) review helpful

As a huge Doors fan I thought this movie was a complete and utter joke! Val Kilmner was awful, the directing was awful, the script was awful, everything about this movie was inaccurate, fabricated, cheesey and sensationalized.

If you want to know more about Morrison's life, read the books.

This movie is easily Oliver's Stone's all-time worst.

Nobody can be Jim Morrison except Jim Morrison, same goes for Elvis.

Every time I saw Kilmner as Morrison in this movie all I could think of was "Top Gun," it's almost sacreligious.

It was a nightmare to see this in the theatre, I promise to never watch this movie again! Ever!

    OK...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 18, 2001

This movie is kind of a toss-up--It's not accurate at all, but in its own right (if you look at the movie and not at the portrayals, directed by Stone) is a very good movie. My friends and I call it an 'acid trip in a box.' Val Kilmer looks and sounds like Morrison, but as far as acting like him, I think it was way off. For example, if anyone's seen the real footage of The Doors on the Ed Sullivan show and compare it to movie footage, it is completely inappropriate. However, Pam was portrayed well by Meg Ryan, and the surviving Doors were acted well also. In any case, this is a toss-up, like i stated--I'd own it to have it, but not really because it's accurate. The three means it's fair to middlin'.

"Did You Have A Good Life When You Died?

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 4, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this The Doors (1991) review helpful

In a 1991 interview with Bob Costas, Oliver Stone said of Jim Morrison "I loved the man."

You'd never know it from watching "The Doors".

The Jim Morrison is the film is a portrayed as a willful, self-indulgent, destructive boor.

If there was another softer, sensitive side to Morrison (as those who knew him claim there was),it's not evident in the movie.

But as with all of Stone's films, there are things in "The Doors" that make it worth seeing.

The concert recreations are magnificent (Stone used 30,000 extras), the cinematogorpahy (by the always remarkable Robert Richardson) is incredible (there is a breathtaking tracking shot of the desert during the opening sequence, done with the haunting "Riders On The Storm" in the background, and Stone gets a great performance out of Val Kilmer).

Watching "The Doors" is like being locked in a room for 2 1/2 hours with a loudmouth, obnoxious drunk.

This new 2 disc DVD edition is beautifully done...the second disc includes a series of extended/deleted scenes (some of which, if included in the theatrical release, would have made it a much better film) and a terrific documentary, "Road To Excess," which includes a lot of behind the scenes footage and interviews with the cast members and directors.

Oliver Stone is one of the few Hollywood directors that has the courage and the clout to
take on big themes and make exciting, energetic movies about them (Vietnam, Salvador, the Kennedy assassination).

It just might be that Jim Morrison just isn't a large enough subject for a movie.

Morrison, in a poem, asked "did you have a good life when you died...enough to make a movie out of?"

Using "The Doors" as a yardstick, the answer would have to be: not in your case, Jim.

Not the REAL Lizard King, shame on STONE

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 26, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this The Doors (1991) review helpful

I am one of the biggest DOORS fans around, but Oliver Stone did not show Jim the poet and the gentle sides of Jim. How could Oliver Stone do this???? Read the books by Ray and John, etc...or see the video THE SOFT PARADE to get a good look at the real Jim Morrison.

DVD special edition of the Doors

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 22, 2001

Okay cats, this version rocks! The old VHS version of the movie provided hours of unspoiled auditory and visual delight. When the new version entered my player immediately thralldoms summoned me. Trancelike, I devoured the movie and all of the special features found on both of the disks. The movie is pivotal here – the new footage was blended seamlessly with the audio track of the VHS version. Having listened to the Doors movie on headphones many times I was held in awe while enjoying new visuals not depicted in my old favorite. Loved the first one, and virtually dies watching the special edition in theatrical format.

The Doors: A great movie but to vivid

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 15, 2000

This is one of the best films I have ever seen, it keeps you on the edge of your seat form the opening sequence right up to Jim Morrison's death in Paris 1971. With extreamly well acted proformances by Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison, Meg Ryan, as Jim's Wife Pam. Untill about one year ago I would have no complaints about this movie but then I read the book: Riders On The Storm by Jhon Densmore (the drummer of the doors) witch the movie was supposedly based on. The book was more spicific on the actual personality of Jim Morrison (He is stoned through the whole movie so you never really see his personality and Oliver Stone twisted around some facts). Despite a few hitches Oliver Tone did a wonderfull job of recreating the doors.

    Angel and the Demon

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 20, 2000

i loved the movie. I loved the way Stone made the scenes I loved the way kilmer made jim live again. it totally showed the two sided life of jim morrison. the devil and the angel. Kilmer hade seemed to have the passion to make jim come to life on screen. he made jim the gentle, shy man he was, then again came back to show angry, enraged men he could be. The poet and the demon. great movie

"this mvoie suck, oliver destroyed Morrison image" well he actually didn't say this, but i also think that it suck, and i've been following The Doors since 5 years ago, and from what i've read, and seen and heard, Jim Morrison was nothing like he was portrayed in this movie.

La mejor pelicula de un icono de los 60

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 13, 1999
