Alexandre Dumas' THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO follows the adventures of Edmond Dantès (Gérard Depardieu), a 19th-century French version of James Bond or Batman, a rich, ruthless, and suave purveyor of homemade justice. This French production goes all out, having the destinction of being the first filmed version of the newly restored unabridged version of Dumas' classic, which runs about 800 pages. The movie was filmed all over Europe, has a cast of thousands where even the extras are big names, and, with an original running time of more than six hours, doesn't leave out any detail from the celebrated novel.

  • Overall:

    good redo of the classic

long (8 hrs) and very detailed adaptation of the Dumas Classic. Stays close to the book, except (and these are not just annoying excepts) glosses over the prison years and the influence of the Abbe Faria, and takes unwarranted liberties witht he end...ing. Otherwise the character studies, the obsession for vengeance and beautiful exteriors make it a very good work Read more Less

8 hours of film were still not enough to do justice to the book The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas. Depardieu gives a brilliant performance. If you liked Jean de Florette, Manon des Sources, Life is Beautiful or Il Postino, you'll love this version ...of The Count of Monte Cristo. Read more Less
