This is a must-see for anyone wanting to learn about fine production values. It is as faithful as Gosford Park and Remains of the Day. Simply wonderful quality and texturing throughout. I have seen it about a dozen times now and do not own it. Whi...le the camera work is fine, the cinematographer had the benefit of shooting marvelous sets resplendant in detail. Read more Less

Finally, an intelligent, well paced movie for adults. The twists and turns in this thriller will keep you hooked all the way through. Also, first rate acting.

    Preachy and condescending

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 24, 2002

Good performances by Jeff Bridges, who seems more presidential than Bill Clinton ever was, and Gary Oldman, chameleon-like as ever. Too bad they are part of a plot that is nothing more than left-wing clap trap.

    Lousy

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 7, 2001

I went into The Contender expecting to like it. I did not. It wasn't a political thriller because it didn't thrill. It wasn't a drama because there was hardly any. It drove home a lot of good points (after two hours) but I was not entertained. An...d even the points are ones that have been beaten to death in the news for the past few years. The movie speaks to women more than men for obvious reasons. Before the end credits roll, it even says in large letters "For Our Daughters". I respect what that could mean but instead I imagine that the filmmakers thought thier daughters needed a nap rather than an engaging and inspiring story. The filmmakers tried to get funding by major studios for two years with Joan Allen attached. They finally got a few independent film companies to put up the money. Then Dreamworks picked it up. This I did not know until after I saw the film by the way. I can see why they had so much trouble. The movie portrays the situation exactly as it would happen with the upmost realism. That said - it's two hours of one back-dealing conversation after another, after another. There is little or no character development at all - just business. One big bore. The true nature of Joan Allen's character is purposely withheld until the end so you can make your own judgments about her. It's a great idea but a real shame considering we have to watch her subtly react to the crap being thrown at her and not know how to read her other than to think "scared little girl". Gary Oldman (looking ancient and barely recognizable) spends the second half trying to destroy Allen in multiple hearings. Fine. But never is the bar raised above "what would happen if you become president and you needed maturnity leave?" She sits there and a tear comes to her eye. If it kept that level of realism throughout, I might at least give it more respect for the mediocre melodrama it's displaying. But Jeff Bridges as the president steals every scene he's in because - you just don't buy him as the president! Him ordering food from the White House kitchen in almost every scene he's in is funny and therefore took me out of the story. Maybe I'm spoiled because I expected conspiracy, intrigue, shots that last less than 5 minutes. I am damn sure I've been spoiled by "The West Wing"! There is one thing I truly enjoyed and that was the beautiful photography. Unfortunately, a beautifully photographed hearing is still a hearing. There's only so much you can do with people symbolically standing under the presidential seal -excellently composed or not. There it is. My opinion. You will feel differently. See it for the real-life situation that it wants to be and not a Tom Clancy novel that it surely isn't. Expect to be preached about the problem and its resolution but not to be entertained. And I ask, "why not both?" Read more Less

    very good film!!!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 6, 2001

In my opinion I think this was a great film, and the acting was awesome. Joan Allen was great and Gary Oldman, well he's one of my favorites. William Peterson was great. But, I think Jeff Bridges and especially Sam Elliott stole the show.

    The Contender

This film is just the kind of trash that we DON'T want our children to see! Anytime you have a group of highly regarded entertainers (movie stars) portray the idea that it is ok for an Atheist, sodomite,Second Ammendment violating, liberal to be appoi...nted to the second highest position in our governing body, it ought to turn your stomach!! Standing up for your right to privacy is one thing, but to portray that some one of "Immoral character," has the right to govern the rest of us is WRONG! This film should be banned from public viewing and the actors and actresses that performed this atrocity should appologize to the citizens of the United Stares of America. Read more Less

    Contender and the real point

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 19, 2001

This movie was a political theme but reviewers have missed the point. This is about a woman who stuck to her principles on privacy even though the public and goverment were destroying her reputation. The Contender is a movie that every adult should... watch to be inpired that freedom of speech does not invalidate your own right to privacy! This is a movie teen agers need to watch so they can see what basic principles and values can do for them, be it bad or good. Read more Less

In response to the response, I believe that it is the sort of politically-motivated idealistic jargon that blinds the voting public. When, if anyone happens to know, was the last mainstream Hollywood film that supported, on a serious note, anything c...onservative? Hollywood is liberal, and they have, are and will try to do anything to make your pencil poke out that circle marked "DEMOCRAT". No complaint, that's just the way things are. Good movie I grant you, but liberals have an ally in Hollywood. I just feel it wouldn't be right to idolize or idealize their spins (many fictional mind you) simply because they share your same viewpoint. Your thoughts... Read more Less

    Good Timing!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 14, 2001

I am a "liberal" and was a little shocked at the bias of this movie albeit in my favor. And released in the theatres right before a presidential election! Good Timing! This movie would have been better had it not been so blatant about it's political... agenda. I must admit I enjoyed it, but felt guilty that a movie that could be construed as propaganda was purposed to affect a national election.Good acting from Oldman and Bridges but the plot was only slightly more interesting than watching CNN. I have one word for the next such attempt- subliminal. This movie just gives the conservatives more "liberal Hollywood" fodder. Read more Less
