I love The Color Purple, it is one of my all time favorite movies. It has excellent performances, beautiful cinematography and it has a very good musical score. But i think the standout performances in the movie were by Whoppi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey..., Margaret Avery and Danny Glover, they were all terrific. I think that this movie should have gotten all 11 Academy Award Nominations. I have watched this movie millions of times and it keeps on getting better everytime i see it. One of film history's landmarks

I remember the controversy that stirred in the theatrical release of this film. I am so glad that time allows us to let the hoopla die, and regard this film as the landmark it is. Of course, no film can be all things to all people. Nothing, NOTHING ...is perfect. ROOTS wasn't perfect. The Color Purple was as close as it gets, though. And it was made against all odds. (Run on sentence coming!) For the premier director in Hollywood to address an experience that was not his own, and he made this humble viewpoint known from the start, and for Whoopi Goldberg, in the midst of the bad vibes she was receiving from WITHIN the African-American culture, to have perservered to hold true to the context, the time period, and the nature of THAT type of oppressive, old south relationship, this was a whopper of a film in so many ways. People were so ill equipped to handle it's magnitude. Kids, to be forever forgiven for their immaturity, and the truly ignorant adults were laughing at the blows being dealt to Celie, among other indignities. This was 1985, and we have since advanced our perceptions so much further. It should just be recognized that this film was one of the major reasons why. Pros: Heart-touching characters & tremendous actors!

When I read the book, it took me to a world far far away...I cried, I laughed, I loved it! But when I watched the film, I was mesmerized! It's a beautiful depiction of all the characters, better sketched in the movie I believe. Whoopi & Oprah wer...e by far my favorite actors in this most memorable movie. Pros: The actors made me feel as though I was in the film. The realisim and emotions were phenomenal

This is my all time favorite movie, I must have watched it over 300 times. I first saw it in 1986 and watched it every Sunday afternoon for 2 years straight. This year alone I have seen it 5 times.
