    wonderful adventure

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 2, 2004 | 1 out of 1 found this The City of Lost Children (1995) review helpful

    Pros: well acted, superbly filmed

Cons: very brief nudity might offend the easily offended making it inappropriate for a family film

The City Of Lost Children is one of those rare gems that people seem to fall upon by word-of-mouth or tend to avoid because it's a foreign film. While others have recommended not watching the film in English, I disagree. Never have I found the En...glish overdubs to be as well done! The English version provides younger children the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful movie which has only a very brief moment of nudity (that's easily missed) and it's worth watching with the family because it's a great adventure they'll truly enjoy.Miette, child actress Judith Vittet, owns the movie as she assists One (Ron Perlman), a gentle but mentally slow chain breaking circus performer, in his search to save his kidnapped little brother from Krank (Daniel Emilfork). Krank is a genetically engineered madman who aims to use the kidnapped childs dreams to reverse his advanced aging process.Adding to the mix are colorful characters which include quadruplets, siamese twins, talking fleas, bioengineered blind men with superb hearing, and a goodhearted, mad scientist. This truly unique movie is just great fun! Read more Less

Of any film that I've ever seen in any genre or of any nationality, no other film than The City of Lost Children engrosses the viewer in such an extraordinary way. A beautifully dark atmosphere, ingenious music, exempliary acting and perfect visual e...ffects make this film unforgettable to say the least! Read more Less

They haven't failed me yet... Miette

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 17, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this The City of Lost Children (1995) review helpful

It seems to inhabit the same nondescript world as Delicatessan: dark, rainy, decaying, brutal, and full of humor. The sci-fi element explores themes of dreaming, mechanized sensory perception, cloning, and genetic engineering. The props, sets, and ma...ttes are elaborately disturbing. Best of all are the comedic cause-and-effect sequences (the teardrop that stops the ship, stealing the safebox, the nightmare that roams the city). One of my favorite films. Read more Less

    Very thrilling!

The City of Lost Children has got to be one of THE strangest films I have ever seen. I mean, I liked it, I liked it a lot. I wanted to rate it a 3.5, but realizing that there is no such rating, thought I'd rate it a 4, but didn't want to rate it the... same as a different movie I had rated as a 4 (Snow Falling on Cedars -watch it!) I didn't completely understand it a first, but after a while, I grasped the plot and didn't let go until the very end. Very thrilling! Read more Less

    Fascinating and Disturbing

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 1, 2006

Pros: Unusual, Dystopian Sci-Fi, Dir: Jeunet of "Amelie"

Cons: Slow spots. En Francais, for those who dislike foreign.

A few amazing sequences in this movie (think shipwreck) and some very clever characters (octopus) almost demand this fantastic dystopian vision be seen. While lesser than "Delicatessen" or "Amelie", this is still a wonderful movie... unlike the vast majority of films out there. This has the regular fare of Jeunet films, but is not the sunnier tale of his recent successes. Read more Less

You'll puke rainbows. It's perfect. DON'T WATCH THE DUBBED VERSION!!!!!!! Amazing cinematography. Terrific direction. A stunning achievement. The Santa Claus sequence is terrifying. The visual effects are first rate and well used through out the fil...m. Characters are well thought out and incredibly designed. Read more Less

    Odd but good

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 13, 2000

An odd film, but definitely a good one. Try to find a dubbed version if possible, the sub-titles only take away from the elaborate scenery of the film.
