In roles made famous by their famed SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE skit, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi star as Ellwood and Jake Blues in this extremely entertaining and successful comedy. Upon Jake's release from prison, the brothers are reunited and visit the orphanage they grew up in--only to discover that it is in danger of being shut down by the county for failure to pay taxes. With a little help from James Brown as a revival preacher, the Blues Brothers are divinely inspired to raise the $5,000 that the orphanage needs to stay open. On their mission from God, they must reunite their old band and raise the money by playing various gigs around town. The wild adventures of the band include dodging evil neo-Nazis, playing in a rowdy redneck bar, and narrowly escaping the crazed Carrie Fisher as Jake's ex-fiancée, who is out to see him dead. Finally, the boys have to get to a gig at the Palace Hotel Ballroom and deliver the $5,000 to the county assessor's office--leading to one of the most wild and hysterical car-chase smash-ups in film history. John Landis has spiced this wonderful romp with fabulous rhythm-and-blues numbers from such greats as Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Cab Calloway, and Ray Charles.

    One of my favorites

By Mac  Feb 2, 2006 | 1 out of 1 found this The Blues Brothers (1980) review helpful

Pros: great music, funny quirky story

Cons: Illinois Nazis...."I HATE Illinois Nazi's!" lol

This is one of my favorites. There is a sense of utter coolness one gets when watching this movie that is hard to describe. I wonder how many middle-class suburban white kids got turned onto the blues after watching this movie? I've been a John L...ee Hooker fan ever since.... As far as Jake and Elwood go-These are the cool uncles that everyone wishes they had growing up. Nothing-not even a scorned Princess Leia with a rocket launcher fazes them. Why? Because they're on a mission from God....lol Read more Less

    The Greatest Musical EVER!!!!

By Elvis  Jul 28, 2004 | 1 out of 1 found this The Blues Brothers (1980) review helpful

Pros: The music in this film is unreal!

    Cons: none

"The one thing that people forget when they watch this film is that Dan and John were not professional blues singers. They were actors pretending to be blues artists." That was a quote from the late great Del Close. Del was the first act...ing director for Saturday Night Live. He also started The Improv Olympic in Chicago and was one of the first members of the famed The Second City. Del explained that the best thing that he ever taught John and Dan was to play the characters at the top of their intelligence. So Dan and John just decided to be the best blues artist that the world had ever seen. Well, it paid off. I know that this isn't the usual review, but I thought I'd share Del's story with you instead. Enjoy the film! Read more Less
