The Coen brothers and their agreeable cast make more fun than sense with this scattered farce about a pothead bowler who is mistaken for a deadbeat philanthropist and drawn into a cluster of kidnapers, nihilists, porn mobsters and Busby Berkeley beauties.

  • Overall:

The Cohen Brothers & Jeff Bridges @ thei

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 5, 2000 | 2 out of 2 found this The Big Lebowski (1998) review helpful

This film is The Cohen Brothers, Jeff Bridges, John Goodman and John Turturro @ their very best. If you read the description off the box, you may not even rent this film @ all. But, I also much admit, this film is not for all. I've found that some p...eople don't find this film amusing but I also think they have the personality of a tree. So, on with the synopsis.---Jeff Bridges --- AKA, The Dude, is basically a bum. Throughout the entire movie, I wonder how he actually is able to pay the rent on his apartment, but never less he entire life consists of bowling and smoking pot with his bowling partner John Goodman (see below) who is absolutely crazy!John Goodman --- Is a Vietnam Vet, since everybody always plays the crazy vet, the Cohen Brothers made a good decision not to overplay that. They still made him quite crazy along with some stupidity. It's quite funny how "The Dude" is already not exactly bright, but when you throw in Goodman, it makes "The Dude" a genius. John Turturro --- AKA, Jesus. Although he has a very small part in the film as Bridges and Goodman's bowling competition he makes a huge impact. He plays a Puerto Rican who has the best dress attire I've seen in quite some time. I believe he only has 2 small parts, but when you watch them, you won't believe your eyes. Turturro is brilliant ! I think he is one of the under rated actors of our time and deserves much more credit then given. (Watch Quiz Show if you want a good example)The Plot --The plot in my opinion is not even 1/3 rd of the movie but is still good when it all comes together. It's basically about Bridges "The Dude" who gets mistaken for another person with his same name "Jeff Lebowski" who is filthy rich. It all starts when somebody comes into the Dude's house and pisses on his rug and in return turns into a kidnapping. If I say anymore, I think I may reveal too much. Just watching Bridges and Goodman together and their mishaps that occur doing the movie, make it all worth watching. The Soundtrack is also amazing from Bob Dylan's "The Man in Me" to the Gipsy Kings version of "Hotel California". It just comes together all to well. Julianne Moore and Steve Buscemi also make noticeable appearances but do not quite make an impact as the others do. Buy it on DVD because if your like me, it won't leave the player for quite some time. After watching it time after time, it only gets better !A Perfect 10 ! Read more Less
