Jacques feels an unusual affinity for the sea and is able to slow his heartrate during dives and stay underwater for superhuman durations. When Jacques meets a ditzy American insurance adjuster (Arquette), a love triangle develops with Jacques torn between his two great loves: a woman, and the ocean. Breathtaking underwater photography and a meditative, fairy-tale story have made this film a cult classic. THE BIG BLUE was heavily cut for its American release, and this Director's Cut (re-released in 2000) restores over forty minutes of footage as well as the original score by composer Eric Serra. The resulting footage has lifted the film's rating to an "R."

    The movie is positively addictive. It's my daughter and I's favorite movie. We recite lines from it. After 10 years, we're still watching it at least monthly. I'm surprised the tape hasn't broken. Don't believe the critics. It's beautiful and f...unny and inspirational. Read more Less

    Pros: Beautiful and Deep.

    Cons: The director's version changed the music unfortunately.

    I first saw the preview for it when I worked at a video store 16 years ago. Since then I've watched it well over a hundred times. It's extremely visually apealing and the characters are genuinely unique. The story is like no other and it is b...ased on the life of the real Jaques Mayol. It's one of those movies that never fail to make you feel good. It takes you away to a better place. You can watch it over and over again. You'll be reciting lines from it in no time. Read more Less
