A young woman from New York named Liza (Katherine MacColl) inherits a Louisiana motel that has been unoccupied for nearly 60 years. While restoring the old building, many of the workers meet mysterious and untimely deaths, each more ill-fated than the next. Furthermore, Liza is visited by a blind specter named Emily (Sarah Keller) who lectures from a 4000-year-old book of collected prophecies that explains the motel is situated above one of seven portals to hell. As her sanity dwindles, Liza finds some much-needed stability in a local doctor named John McCabe (David Warbeck), who is determined to find a rational explanation for the recent state of affairs. Nevertheless, the protagonists are led through a maze of bizarre confrontations with beings beyond the realm of the living, and into an apocalyptic world of unknown horrors.

THE BEYOND is at once the quintessential Lucio Fulci film and a staple in the overall Italian horror genre. The director's epic masterpiece is a blend of atmospheric surrealism and nightmarish visions (a grisly tarantula attack, flesh-melting acid spills, a softball-sized gun blast through the skull of a young zombified girl, and an eyeball impaling, or two) that are definitely unsuitable for those with weak stomachs.

    The Ultimate Fulci Horror Classic

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 22, 2002

As I stated in my review of the Fulci Collection 2-pack of this film and THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, THE BEYOND is the ultimate in Lucio Fulci's gorefests! To put my opinion in further detail, THE BEYOND is nearly an hour and a half of all-out gore ga...lore! Crucifixion!Acid spilled on faces! Eyeballs gouged out in three ways! Tarantulas feasting on a face! And a head being shot off! But there are some other terrific qualities about THE BEYOND that qualifies it as Fulci's masterpiece. One of them is the presence of Katherine (Catriona) MacColl as the heroine; she brings an appealing quality to this role and she is so beautiful. David Warbeck is awesome too; like Ian McCulloch of ZOMBIE and Christopher George of CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, Warbeck has a great ruggedness to the male lead role; he looks really cool dropping new bullets into his gun through the barrel. And I love the music score; still in my head after my first viewing 3 weeks ago. All in all, a must for any horror fan/gorehound/Italian horror buff! Watch for THE BEYOND on AMC during its Horror Movie week starting this Friday! Read more Less

    Fulci's most memorable gorefest.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 23, 2001

Though Argento was more crafted in horror, Lucio Fulci gave me what I wanted to see: SPLATTER! THE BEYOND is very much lagging at times storywise and dialogue wise. But the gore is here: spider attacks, the trademark eye-gouges, chain-slashing, acid-...bathing, and more. Copies of SEVEN DOORS OF DEATH are abound, but if you want your green's worth in red, get the DVD of THE BEYOND. Read more Less
