    Good Return

    By __A_YAHOO_USER__  Feb 9, 2006

    Pros: Some nice, funky beats.

Cons: Too little experimentation, lots of rap.

Upon hearing the release of "Testify", I was immediately enthused to get it. It was sold out for the first 1 1/2 (at least in my area), a fact I thought is pretty impressive. From "Roots In Stereo" to "Mark My Words", I ...realized this wasn't exactly what I was expecting from P.O.D. Still, I have come a long way towards enjoying it. A couple of good tracks really caught my ears: "Goodbye For Now" and "Mark My Words". I seriously didn't know what to think when I first listened to the whole record, but now it has grown on me and with every listen-through, it seems to get better and better. Also, the stlye changed significantly from the radio-based songs of the self-titled album into something more original as in "Satellite" and "Fundamental Elements Of Southtown". If you enjoyed those two, you should have no problem with this one. Read more Less

    P.O.D. Testify

    By Michael  Jan 27, 2006

    Pros: Diverse album

    Cons: n/a

Testify is the latest offering from P.O.D. and it's pretty solid. The album is probably the bands most diverse to date. Several songs have a reggae influence like Roots in Stereo or Strength Of My Life. Heavier material like Lights Out, Say Hello..., and Teachers really rock hard. New guitarist Jason Truby delivers some crushing riffs here. The band even shows a mellow side on Goodbye For Now. Overall this album might be the bands most satisfying to date. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Testify

Whether it be the group's Christian ethos, ethnically diverse makeup or reggae sunsplashmeetsOzzfest vibe, POD has always retained a bit more respectability than its raprock peers. Even during the group's most "numetal" moments, they sound like they have at least heard Bad Brains first three albums and probably dug them. Smartly, on their fifth studio album Testify the band continues to eschew such raprock gimmicks as ancillary use of turntables and cheesy samples, and instead they deliver a mature and workmanlike metal monsterpiece. Bright, loud but always artful, Testify's glossy production comes via journeyman hit making producer and synthesizer master Glenn Ballard. While POD have lost none of their rootsy funkmetal swagger, Ballard the man behind such poptitans as Michael Jackson, Van Halen and Alanis Morrissette has found a way to give them an eminently palatable studio sheen that brings to mind a deft mix of the arena rock of Asia and The Police as much as it does Sepultura. T...he move toward a more polished sound also pays dividends creatively as guitarist Jason Truby, while not quite as forwardthinking as Audioslave's Tom Morello, still nonetheless shines under Ballard's approach delivering truly inspired and technically devastating performance. Similarly, vocalist Sonny seems reinvigorated and practically giddy about, "Running up a mountain chains tied to my feet" as he sings on the leadoff track "Roots In Stereo". Spiritually, the band is as concerned as ever with Jah, inner strength and the "blood of God's veins" and if the melancholy single "Goodbye For Now" is any indication they still have a few innerdemons to wrestle with creatively. Luckily though they haven't forgot the funk and songs such as the headsnapping "Lights Out" and the Sabbathesque "Sounds Like War" combine a bit of hiphop fun with Bob Marleyinspired metal faith. Throw in a couple of serendipitous guest spots from Hasidic rapper Matisyahu and by the time you get to the devastating metalreggae album closer "Mark My Words" you've got a band reborn. - Matt Collar, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

P.O.D.

While they play around with the infectious grooves of reggae and Latin music and the heavy deliverance of hip-hop and rock, San Diego's hard rock four-piece P.O.D. defined a universal message. They're born-again Christians and such a thing is central in their music. They're not entirely classified as a Christian band though. Let that be known.Formed in 1992 in the SoCal... Read more
