grammy nommine I love it awsome artist
While I love the older Phil Collins solo work, Testify is now one of my favorite Collin's albums. Being without you is driving me crazy is one of my favorite tracks. Album sounds like older Colin's efforts, but with a modern flare. Not as many horns as his last couple of albums.
Oh, the irony of it all!!! Testify? Did his lawyers come up with that one?
Of all of the musicians who came out of the rock field in the late 60's and early 70's, Phil was arguably the best of all of them. His drums were so precise and so delicate and hard driving at the same time. There will never be another drummer who had the ambition and sense of musicality that Phil did in those days and even in the modern day there are only a few, but no match for the early drumming days of Phil.
Apparently Phil needs to read his own biography on why he started making music to begin with. There is no passion anymore. Ironic because his songs certainly have provided passion for some people, but PLEASE...
I am talking about honesty in being a true musician. What Phil believed in thirty years ago has long been gone, erased and replaced by a business man who has studied way to much of the horrible muzak in supermarkets and dental shops. He is content on trying to keep his elusive is somewhat ignorant fan base still happy, although I think even they are somewhat puzzled by this latest installment.
The drum machines have been out of date since the early 90's. So why use them in this context? There used to be a good balance between using the drum machines in his early solo career and with Genesis along with his signature playing. Now, the drum machines just hang out there. No deliberate attempt at making music to think about anymore. His ego is just too damn big!
He needs to start collaborating with other people again. That is what made Phil Collins such an amazing musician was his ability to communicate with other musicians.
What do I know? The people that love Testify, great, I am glad that music is being made with your exact intentions in mind, but quite franky, his last album three studio albums have bored me to tears. And with every album, with the exception of the tribute to Buddy Rich, he has slowly deteriorated any credibility that he used to have. If that is what this man wants out of life: to be remembered that he used to be a GREAT musician, he has certainly convinced me.
Go ahead, keep buying this product. I guarantee, you will get more of it in the future.
I'll stick to Unorthodox Behaviour.
One last thing. I had heard a lot of great things about this album. "A return to form." "A darker album." Naw, it is just more muzak...
Phil Collins totally rocks out on this album. I love it so much I have like 3 copies. I keep one copy in my CD player, another in my car, and another at my boyfriend's. I love Phil Collins!!!!

GREAT ALBUM!!!!!!!
Especially: CANT STOP LOVING YOU-TESTIFY-COME WITH ME-DRIVING ME CRAZY-THRU MY EYES AND THE LEAST YOU CAN DO.
OK, guys..what album did YOU all listen to? I just got this yesterday and it is absolutely HORRID beyond words. (And I'm a long-time Phil fan).
EVERY song on this disc is pure "woe-is-me..my wife is leaving..I'm so sad.." depressing garbage. (Is something going on with Phil and his wife that I haven't heard about yet? Didn't he just re-marry in 99?)
I've followed Genesis since the late 70s, and was very impressed by Phil's early solo work (Face Value and Hello, I Must Be Going). This was GREAT music, and I've listened to it thousands of times. So, I am totally unable to figure out how people have written (about this last disc): "it's great! If you love his early stuff [eg: Face Value], this is it all over again!"..Um, NO, it is NOT.
EVERY song on this disc sounds EXACTLY LIKE THE SONG BEFORE AND AFTER IT. EVERY song is slow, depressing and totally lacking any character, creativity, lyrics, musical construction, etc. I even commented to my wife that Phil probably wrote the entire album in about 31 minutes. It sure doesn't show any creativity or variety. He just took one basic song (woe is me..life sucks) and wrote 12 different variations of it. (Actually, I didn't listen carefully to the words on all the tracks, as they all generally sounded the same..but the wife [who is not the Phil fan I am] also agreed about the overall "tone" of the songs).
Maybe Phil has just "sold out" to the easy listening crowd. Maybe some radio stations will play these "ballads". (I wouldn't! They depress me beyond words). All I know is that Phil has officially "LOST IT". (And he used to be a GREAT drummer and singer - especially back in his early solo days and the 80's Genesis period).
Oh..one more thing..what in the world is UP with all the drum-machine garbage? Phil is (originally) a GREAT **DRUMMER** (before he even took over for Peter Gabriel as the lead singer of Genesis)! Why would a great drummer compose "songs" (and I use the term loosely) that relies almost entirely on techno-pop drum machines that sound like he bought them at Wal-Mart? I mean..I can't even begin to put into words just how BAD this sounded to me. It's like something I'd hear in an elevator..where's "In the Air Tonight" and other Phil-esque drum tunes? They sure AIN'T HERE!! Chester Thompson (who toured with Genesis often as the 2nd [and awesome!] drummer) must be laughing his head off at the sheer idiocy of whatever in the WORLD Phil was thinking about here.
Sorry, Phil..get back to the "good" stuff would ya? The past few albums have been REAL stinkers, IMHO!
I really wanted to like this latest from Phil so much......The first time I played this CD I couldn't help but speculate how similar all of the songs sounded. The best two songs are Wake Up Call & Testify. If you want more of the avant garde sound that made them so famous, get Peter Gabriel's "Up" instead.
Ok,this album angers me! Phil Collins is totally ripping off Billy Ocean's style!!! I mean seriously, 'Testify' is just 'Get Out of my Dreams...' played in an F-sharp with new lyrics!! Even the subject matter of the song ,the domestic distubance trial of Hamberstein Vs. Lorber, is a rip off of the concept of Billy-O's 'In Soul We Trust' album. Though creative, the duet with Sandra Bernhard on the hymn 'Swing Low'just doesn't give the hope 'Carribean Queen' gave. I gave two stars because the Ocean-Man changed my life, maybe he did it for Phil too...
This guy started with Genesis, I'm ready for Revelation. That would mean he quit producing this crap.
Easily his second-best solo release yet (with "Both Sides' being his best.) Fans that are trashing TESTIFY make absolutely no sense. Is it really THAT much different from what you were expecting out of Phil? Is it really THAT much different from what he has done previously? If you liked his previous releases, logically you should like this one as well.
this album was good but it could have used more real drums instead of the boring old drum machine. the songs are pretty good but dont match up to his old hits...after all is said and done i like this album but i think his last album, dance into the light, was better. im glad phil is back, hopefully his next album will not be so poppy because after a while these pop songs get boring
What fantastic record Phil !!
Great return for Phil Collins into the spot.
Very nice ballads included like Testify, This Love This Heart, Can't Stop Loving You, The Least You Can Do. And more, Come With Me & Wake Up Call are amazing lubally songs.
And don't miss Thru My Eyes and Driving Me Crazy, they are so sweet.
All and all a very good album as only Phil knows to make.
I have been waiting for so long for a new Phil CD, and this one was worth the wait. It has something for everyone here. A little bit of techno, a little bit of a latin beat, soft rock, pop, and DRUMS!
This is a great CD-don't pass it up.
Just finished listening to this CD and the olny thing I can say is it's very boring. Too bad. He used to be good.
Mature, complete, sensible....Phil Collins bring you somewhere with each songs...Wonderful harmonics, lyrics with music of a extreme quality...
A album to listen, not just to hear...
Un album à écouter, non pas juste pour entendre....
After six years without a new records, Phil come back for consolidade his works in Pop Music. He's know how to mix eletronic and acoustic instruments like anybody !! And your tight in drums .... without words ... Logical ... if you like a notes for BPM, wrong CD ... but if you like sensibility and a workshop to How Record a Drums in pop music ... BUY NOW !!!
This is one of the best!
He's the man :)
So glad I bought it, best music I ever heard!!!!!!!!
OH YEAH!!! PHIL COLLINS IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER!!! IF YOU'RE NOT LISTENING TO "TESTIFY" RIGHT NOW, YOU'RE MISSING OUT ON A LOT! I have never felt this confident about an album before... WOW! Phil wasn't joking when he said it contained his best material. Not even critics have bashed this album as hard as they did with previous efforts. This album proves Phil Collins has longevity and the ability to write provocative and emotionally moving songs. New musicians can be found on this album and they help provide a new and fresh sound that is all Phil's own. I'll take on anyone who says anything bad about this album. Don't waste your time with other singer-song writers, get the real deal. "Testify" is - without question - an album that has some of Phil's best material in decades. GO TO YOUR STORE AND BUY IT NOW IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE SO! :)
Greetings! Stop whatever you're doing! "Testify" is the new Phil Collins album and contains such powerful tracks as "Testify," "Can't Stop Loving You," "This Love This Heart," "Don't Get Me Started" and "Through My Eyes." The only weak moments can be found in "You Touch My Heart" and "Not Too Late." Don't believe the negativity that so-called "fans" will present here >>> Anyone who writes bad things about this album has not heard it enough (!) If you have not bought the album yet, BUY IT RIGHT AWAY!!!
Classic Phil... is this 1981 all over agasin?!?
Do you remember when Phil was in a great band? Do you remember when he was involved in the creation of some of the most interesting and creative music that we heard in the 70s and 80s?
I hope we all remember...because, apparently Phil doesn't remember.
The big stations won't touch this outdated stuff anymore, but there could be hope at "Warm" and "Soft" stations.
Phil, How about bringing back the great fusion jazz you created with band Brand X on Unorthodox Behavior or the killer CD Product instead of the commercial music that so many bands are playing today. Some of us never got enough!!
I was really looking forward to hearing something new from this great musician. Unfortunately, its nothing original. At times, I kept hearing other songs especially the last track ("You Touch My Heart") that sounded too much like "True Colors". I enjoy Phil Collins' ballads and this album is full of them. Other than leaving me with the uncomfortable feeling that I had heard the songs before, "Testify" is a good, not great, and enjoyable offering.
Phil Collins does what he does, and he's still doing it damned well. Good songs, performance, and production. If you're a fan, or just appreciate well-crafted music, you'll love this. If not, well, there's plenty of titillation and midless angst out there to blow your money on.
In 1973, Phil Collins was a great drummer in a great band. In 1976 he was a great drummer and a decent (if somewhat soulless singer) in a very good band. By 1985, he was an annoying singer and a terrible songwriter in a band that needed to be stopped before they put out so much bad material that they obscured their substantial early achievement.
Phil should get back behind the drum kit and stop insulting us with his Disney-fied, adult contemporary, soft 101.3 crap music.
Great to be able to hear the whole CD from Phil's website before it goes on sale next week. For those who were bored with Sussudio and all the horns, Testify is a nice change. It's a happier effort than Both Sides. The title track will likely be a bigger hit than the first single release (Can't stop loving you). Go to philcollins.co.uk and click on Listening Party.
