| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Yet another overview of Red Foley's Decca years (19441951), this twodisc Proper "pair" set is the clear first choice, chronicling all of the singer's biggest hits of the era. "Smoke on the Water," "Old Shep," "New Pretty Blonde (Jolie Blon)," "Tennessee Saturday Night," "Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy," and "Peace in the Valley" are all here, as well as "Freight Train Boogie," "Sugarfoot Rag," "Birmingham Bounce," "Hillbilly Fever," and many others. At 52 tracks, there's a lot of nonessential material here, but then, Foley's average stuff was still excellent, and the detailed liner notes (and low price) make this a sweet deal. - Jim Smith, All Music Guide |

Pros: lots of good songs, extremely cheap, nice packaging
Cons: no kitty wells! lots of transcriptions
this is a good buy. it's got a lot of his most popular songs and it's really cheap. the first disc is packed full of great songs, but the second disc could have been a bit better. it's only 50-something minutes long, and almost half the songs are transcriptions, not studio recordings. that's fine and dandy, but it also means the songs are shorter than usual and the quality varies. that's alright, but i would have liked to have known before i bought it! though, i still would have bought it and i'm glad i have it.
my other complaint is that there are none of Red's duets with Kitty Wells!! why?! i love their duets. including the duets would have made this double-cd extremely excellent. at least there are 4 (i think) songs with Ernest Tubb! ...
