    Pros: Great Music

    Cons: Nothing Spectacular

As with every Tori Amos album, I rushed out to get this and hear what I was hoping to be an album rich with a change. It's been long promised that Tori would release an album of remixes of her older songs, and only getting "Mary" and &...quot;Sweet Dreams" as Remixes, or rather re-recordings, kinda disappointed me. "Angels" and "Snow Cherries From France" are terrific new songs. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not bashing the album, but for the last 12 years all us big fans have heard about a REMIX album. Where someone would make Tori's awesome music somewhat danceable, not just poor DJ mixes like the horrible "Professional Widow" mixes that have been floating around, and even poke their evil head out on this album as well.I did notice however that the sound quality is a lot richer on this album. I could hear tiny background sounds from the drums and bass on songs like "Spark" and "Tear in your Hand" that I can't hear on the original albums. Re-recording these songs with newer technology has obviously brightened up these classics. As for the additional DVD. The three live videos of Tori doing a soundcheck are great, but even greater is the Photo gallery in which beautiful pictures of Tori are slowly rolled onto the screen. It's just wonderful to see that over the last twelve years Tori has not only become a wonderous songwriter and singer, but has gotten more beautiful with age. Read more Less

    Pros: Everything

    Cons: not enough tracks!

Tori brilliantly remixes and remasters her greatest songs. The new ones are soon to be favorites and the DVD portion is stunning.

    Pros: It's Tori

    Cons: none

I am a huge Tori Amos fan. So naturaly this is going to be a good review. But to me this album serves two purposes. First, all the songs on the album have been redone. So for her fans it is a fresh take on her old songs. Plus she ads 2 new songs. Seco...nd, for people who are not familiar with her music, it gives a complete outline of her carrer. It's almost like an absract, and if you want to learn more then you can listen to her earlier music.Reader be warned, her albums are like Layes potato chips. . . . you can't just have one! Pros: None

    Cons: None

Tori Amos is one of those love-her, hate-her types of artist. And I have to admit, on some of her CDs I can't listen all the way through. The lyrics are always powerful, and sometimes, overpowering. But this collection, as it stands in the track ...list, is superb. It has all the "hits" with some exceptions (my opinion). But, much like Tom Waits, some great music must be taken in doses. Read more Less

Pros: A great compilation for anyone new to Tori's music. Every one is a great song.

Cons: Not much new for the loyal fanbase

I'll admit it--ever since 'From the Choirgirl Hotel,' I've been a little let down by each of Tori's albums. 'To Venus and Back' did eventually grow on me. 'Strange Little Girl' was brilliant in a very different, we...ird way. I was the most let down by 'Scarlet's Walk.'However, yay for Tori that she's had the staying power, and that she gets to release a greatest hits album. I won't be purchasing it--I already have most all of these songs, *LOL* But for anyone just learning of Tori, or a fan who hasn't yet had the chance to purchase all of Tori's older albums, I would say go ahead and buy it. Tori's lyrics are powerful (if a little strange), and her music is so amazing. Read more Less

The Best Tales Of A Strange Librarian

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 8, 2003

Pros: Unusual selection of Tori Amos' best songs.

Cons: Not all Tori Amos' hits are included.

On November 18th, 2003, one of the five most influential rock stars of all time according to Q magazine released her first ever collection. Tori Amos, the American pianist, composer and singer made up a compilation, entitled Tales Of A Librarian, of ...twenty of her favourite songs which she describes to be her musical autobiography. The album is not just another ordinary “Best Of”, however, as Tori has personally revisited and reconditioned the original material “to offer a new perspective” on some songs she particularly enjoys. Furthermore, two new compositions (“Angels” and “Snow Cherries From France”) are included, as well as a couple of extremely rare non-LP songs (“Mary” and “Sweet Dreams”). In addition to all this, a bonus DVD comes along with Tales Of A Librarian, featuring songs recorded live during sound check of the final show of Amos' 2003 North-American tour.Despite being of uncommon quality, some negative points about the collection also have to be taken into consideration. Much attention was given to her first solo album, Little Earthquakes (1991), from which six songs have been taken, while not even one composition from her last release, Scarlet’s Walk (2002), features among Tori’s best “tales”. Also, only four insignificant songs (except for the funny “Professional Widow”) were taken from her epic third album released in 1996, Boys For Pele. This has probably disappointed some Ears With Feet which is how her fans call themselves, as hymns like “Hey Jupiter” or “A Sorta Fairytale” are missing from Tori Amos’ long-expected first compilation. Tales Of A Librarian may not be the perfect selection for all ears, but Amos’ personal taste is surely worth taking into account. Songs like “Me And A Gun”, which tells us “the things that go through your head” when you are being raped, and “Cornflake Girl”, greatly appreciated by the critics, more than make up for any possible failing due to Tori’s eccentric opinion about her own carreer. Tales of a Librarian features some of Amos' best

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 6, 2003

Pros: songs are some of the best she's ever put out

Cons: the newbies on the album are nothing great

Tori Amos' new album Tales of a Librarian is a definite must have for the definitive Amos fan. Taking songs from all over her career which has spanned more than 10 years many of her best works are on this compulation. Silent all these Years, al...ong with Precious Things & Winter are all from her very first album Little Earthquakes then there's Cornflake Girl, God, and Baker Baker taken from her Under the Pink album. Playboy Mommy, Jackie's Strength, & Spark off of her From the Choirgirl Hotel album all piece together a lengthy career and showcase not only her beautiful vocals but also show her range in lyrics jumping from one subject to another, each telling there story amidst a piano in the backdrop. Me and A Gun, off of her Strange Little Girls album is the stand-out in this album with just her voice heard on this track makes you wonder why they bother with any background music for her. The new songs Angels, Sweet Dreams & Snow Cherries from France are nothing special, but all in all a very good album for not just hardcore Amos fans but a very good starter for newbies wondering what her music is all about.
