1st and Best Album Rilo Kiley Ever Released
, November 12, 2005 -
Good in Concert, great on CD
, September 27, 2001Reviewer: mrossifer - See all mrossifer's reviewsPicked up the CD at a show (they opened for Nada Surf) after loving their set, put it on and fell in love. Their harder live set translates into a great poppy album full of heartfelt songs. Any album that stands up to 12 hours of driving to Detroit has to be excellent. Anyone into The Rentals' "7 More Minutes," the calmer songs of Bran Van 3000's "Glee" or any sort of girl-rock should adore this album.
Viva Rilo Kiley!

Pro Reviews: Take Offs and Landings
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews With a sound that veers from the acoustic simplicity and poetic lyricism of coffeehouse folk to the bouncy, lo-fi infectiousness of D.I.Y. indie pop, this California quartet writes melodies so damn catchy, you might almost think you've heard them before. Songs like "Go Ahead" and "Bulletproof" showcase the band's most distinctive asset -- the sweet vocals and bittersweet lyrics of Jenny Lewis -- while the breezy hooks and driving beats of tunes like "Wires and Waves" and "Always" show surprising commercial potential. The 13-song album has a few weak spots -- guitarist Blake Sennett's cracking vocals make him sound like Elliott Smith's nervous kid brother on "Small Figures in a Vast Expanse," while a few of the down-tempo songs slow the album's momentum -- but stronger numbers like the gorgeous horn-laden waltz of "Don't Deconstruct" are the sound of a young band coming into its own. - Bret Love, All Music Guide |

Pros: Album is filled with great bittersweet songs.
Cons: very depressing songs.
My friends and I have seen Rilo Kiley so many times @The Troubadour, The Chain Reaction, The Glasshouse, and The Henry Fonda Theater. Opening for Phantom Planet, Rooney, Ridel High or headling, their live peroformances are just as wonderful as their songs in the album.
"Take Offs and Landings" is one album to bring along to mellow house parties. It's got songs great for background music at parties. "Go Ahead", "Science Vs. Romance", "Pictures of Success", my favorite track - "august", "always", "plain crash in c"-which actually features Phantom Planet's Alex Greenwald on synths, is a great song, as well as phillip watt on trumpet, its a great song. All the songs in "Take offs and Landings" are so sad yet so fun to listen to all the way from start to finish! ...
