    One of Faith's best

Of all the albums Faith Hill has recorded, Take Me As I Am is her best example at performing traditional country. The sounds of her early hits -- including "Wild One," her first No. 1 hit -- just sing traditional country. Also, I prefer Faith's rendi...tion of "Piece of My Heart" to the screamfest that Janis Joplin and Big Brother offered. Her duet with Larry Stewart (lead singer of Restless Heart) on "I've Got This Friend" hinted at a possible duet partner during the early years of her career as they did sound great together; we all know who Faith's later duet (and life's) partner would end up being. I also had a chance to see her at the 1994 Mississippi Valley Fair in Davenport, IA, long before superstardom and Tim McGraw set in; the concert was mainly a live rendition of Take Me As I Am, but she showed the great star potential that has carried her to where she is today. However, one problem I do have is that Hill's later music would delve more on the pop side of things, especially "Breathe" and "There You'll Be;" those songs are best suited for adult contemporary and/or casual country fans, not traditional country fans. But not to worry, as "real country" folks can enjoy Faith Hill, too, through Take Me As I Am, a prime example of how her powerful voice can deliver traditional country music. Read more Less

Faith Hill's debut established the willowy singer as the lady-in-waiting to Reba McEntire's throne. Like McEntire, Hill's voice could crackle just as well as it sparkled, and Take Me as I Am allowed her to do both. The wide-open abandon of the hit single "Wild One" was immediate and undeniable, and Hill delivered the vocal with sassy, youthful exuberance. But she was just as convincing on the low-key heart-tugger "Just About Now" and the Gary Burr-penned ballad "Just Around the Eyes." She figured out a way to channel Janis Joplin's vocal during a country-fried retelling of "Piece of My Heart," in spite of a canned meat-quality backing track, and handled the Larry Steward duet "I've Got This Friend" with ease. By focusing Hill's vocal and supporting her with unobtrusive instrumentation, producers Burr and Scott Hendricks helped make Take Me as I Am that much more effective, and ensured that no one would forget about Hill anytime soon.
