An underrated masterpiece of the 1990's

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 5, 2007

    Pros: The whole package!

Cons: Some of the songs are a little too short.

Lisa Loeb's "Tails'" final song, "Stay (I Missed You)", hit #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 in 1994, making Lisa Loeb the first and still the only artist in music history to have a number-one hit before being signed to any rec...ord label. It's one of the best and most memorable songs of the 1990's and the main reason behind my decision to get the album. But the album is a lot more than just the hit song; "Tails" features Lisa Loeb at her best. The melodies and the handling of instruments are impressive; the songs "Hurricane" and "Do You Sleep?" are fine examples. The terrific lyrics (despite sounding fragmentary in some tracks) combined with Lisa Loeb's original, a bit childish singing voice (which suits these songs perfectly) make the whole package simply irresistible. Some of the cuts should have been longer but it doesn't matter that much because this is one of the best albums ever. I can recommend this to anyone. Read more Less

    I liked every song--6 stars

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 5, 2002

There are not many albums where you can say, "I liked every song on it" This is one of them. Every songs a jem and the lyrics are witty and thought provoking. Hard to name favorites on this one but Taffy, and Stay rank in the top.

Lisa Loeb is a rarity in the music industry. She released her first single -- the gentle "Stay," taken from the Reality Bites soundtrack -- before she was signed to any record label and saw it hit number one. Record companies were eager to sign her, and she eventually settled with Geffen. Instead of rushing out her debut album, she waited over a year, releasing Tails in the fall of 1995. Surprisingly, it didn't fade away, becoming a hit with adult alternative radio stations and listeners. That's because Tails delivers on the promise of "Stay." While the basic folk-rock elements of the song are present, much of the material on the record doesn't sound like her breakthrough hit; there are some distorted guitars here and there, and she even rocks out a little bit. Nothing on Tails is as good as "Stay," teither; there are too many sophomoric lyrics and unfinished melodies, but it is a pleasant record and, in its own way, charming. There is an innocence and naïveté about Lisa Loeb that make...s her music sweetly ingratiating, even when her ideas are underdeveloped. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Lisa Loeb

If she had never made another record, Lisa Loeb would still go down in the books as the first unsigned artist to top the American charts; her single "Stay" -- from the soundtrack to 1994's Reality Bites -- spent three weeks at number one soon after the film's release. Born in Dallas, Loeb studied piano as a child but later switched to guitar. At Brown University, she st... Read more
