    This is where music should have been heading back in 1977, not where it ended up. Fortunately, there are a few bands who realize this. Tortoise being one of them. They are a genre all to themselves but they still attract a large pallete of musical st...yles without distracting from having their own identity. If you enjoy the current "post rock scene", (whatever that means) then this album is right up your alley. Everything from trip hop to avant-garde classical and jazz mixed with a smooth laid back style, this is definitely the first album to check out for those unaware of the Tortoise noise. Some sounds I heard on the album along the way. Every purcussion instrument ever made coupled with electronic drums. Brass sections, guitar that is used as a feature that the band didn't use before. The bass on this album is incredible, as I think they used no more than two bass players, unheard of for a band. Some other bands that reminded me of these guys: Henry Cow, Can, Magma, Radiohead, Kraftwerk, Mike Oldfield, Sea and Cake, Roxy Music, Frank Zappa and everything else in between. Cannot recommend this album enough. It is just as good as what everybody says and more. You will not be disappointed... Read more Less

    This is the best Tortoise release! If you do not have this you are truly missing out. Tortoise is one of the leaders in avant garde/jazz/fusion andthis is a classic albums combining elements of electronica/
    oriental/
    country twang, and places the piece...s in such a way that it sounds brand new. Tortoise take the approach of adding on elements in their music, this was one of the best albums of 98, and is a keypoint to where music is going.see Radiohead, Sea and Cake. Read more Less
