Great Idea, Poor Execution
Pros: Interesting environment, Orwellian vision of the future
Cons: Painfully slow-moving and ultimately unsatisfying
This is a really nice packaging of a really bad movie. The concept is a good one: A man stuck in a reality of an oppressive society that controls his every action, no matter how personal, and monitors all he does goes against the system.
Unfortunately, somebody went to the Stanley Kubrick school of minimal dialogue. This movie drags along, advancing the plot in tiny portions until the end which is abrupt and unclear in its implications.
If you are a Lucas fan and just want to see how he got started, rent it. If you actually want to see it again, I don't know why. The real tragedy is that the female star of this movie was quite pretty until she shaved her head for this role.Was this review helpful? Yes - NoStrange Strange Movie
THX-1138, George Lucas's first feature film, is something almost impossible to describe. It's part experimental film, with such things as found dialouge and security camera style placing of the camera that really hadn't been seen before in feature films. It's part love story, with THX rebelling against the Orwellian system and being with the woman he loves. Overall, it's a great sci-fi movie for people with open minds, and a hungry curiousity.
