    Get yourself an Olevia 542i

By Johnnie  Feb 16, 2007 | 5 out of 6 found this Syntax Olevia 542I review helpful

Pros: Good Picture, Nice features, excellent price

Cons: Support needs help, Slow power up, slow channel change, only 1 HDMI input

I bought mine off of ShopNBC (one of their special offers). It came with a free RCA Up convert DVD Recorder and HDMI cable (those cables cost between $50-$100). Out of the box, the TV was wonderful. I wanted to put it in the living room but did not h...ave a stand to put it on so I disconnect my 32in Soyo HD-Ready that was in my bedroom to connect it. The TV is heavy (almost 100 lbs). I placed it on my stand by myself (would not recommend you try, it's a 2 person job). Positives: Great picture, especially HD channels, nice sound, interesting menu, lots of hook-ups (up to 10), etc. Negatives: upgrades (firmware) did fix my problem with the date/day (you can only input the date, time, the TV determines the day and it was wrong), but now my buttons on front are mixed up. My volume buttons control my channels and visa versa, and my Menu button controls my Source and visa versa. I emailed Olevia, but no response, which surprised me because they were so quick to respond to my date problem. (replied w/i 24 hours as their automated answering machine states). But as of today (Feb 16, 2007) I have not gotten a response yet, even after 4 emails, the last being to the person who helped with the date thing. Another thing, which a lot of reviews I've read have, is that the channel changing through the tuner is slow and the power on time is slow. Kind of reminds me of the old TV's with tubes that had to warm up before you got a picture. That really does not bother me though, because I use a HD cable box from TimeWarner Cable. Also, I don't know if this is true of all HDTV's but it takes awhile for it to find HD channels when you are doing you channel set up. The analog channel set ups are no problem. Also the TV makes a popping noise when it first comes on (not sure what that is all about). The PIP function is weird. There is no function marked PIP on the remote, you use the View to do your PIP. You also have to go into the menu to change the PIP size and to move the PIP. The speakers are removable, but to place them on the sides of the TV you have to buy a kit and I have not been able to even locate the kit yet (I also emailed Olevia about that and have not gotten a response). Overall, it is a wonderful TV at a good price. There are some things that they could have done different, i.e. quicker turn on time, PIP button, 2 HDMI inputs, etc... but I would say overall that you will get a quality TV for the price. The Tech help, when you get them, works. I think they make a quality product, but are unable to keep up the support requests. If I had to do it again, I would still buy this TV! Read more Less

    EXCELLENT TV , Awesome design

By Jun  Jul 11, 2007 | 1 out of 1 found this Syntax Olevia 542I review helpful

Pros: Excellent price, Excellent quality, Just awesome

    Cons: None

What Can I say about this TV? It is ABSOLUTELY a GORGEOUS TV.. Purchased one for myself, loved it soo much that I bought a second set for my folks. I grew up only knowing SONY TV's.. I thought they were the best.. I was in the market for a SL...EEK LCD HDTV, and I went to a local store to compare the TV's, there was the SONY, SAMSUNG, OLEVIA, and other brands.. Looking at the picture quality, the OLEVIA in my opinion had the best picture quality. The pictures are CRISP, SHARP, and makes watching HD SPORTS and DISCOVERY HD an experience you will never forget. You are IMMERSED in the WORLD that you are watching. SPORTS feels like YOU ARE PLAYING WITH THE PLAYERS.. Football and Basketball, seems like I'm standing next to the Players.. LEBRON JAMES dunking over you. With the NATURE SHOWS, WOW is all I can say.. The TREES, the BUGS, the ANIMALS and NATURE all around you .. you are TOTALLY IMMERSED IN THE EXPERIENCE......The picture quality in my opinion was MUCH better than the higher priced TV's ($1,000 or more).. I was shocked myself. The Olevia had a VERY SLEEK design, and I've been receiving tons of compliments from friends and family. Even when the TV is off, it looks like a work of art there in the living room..It is SLEEK, STURDY, futuristic, and CLEAN design that will get you compliments from all friends. Best of all, price is much better than SAMSUNG, SONY, and LG.. I heard from a techie friend of mine that with the other brands, you are paying extra for the name.. With the OLEVIA, you get no nonsense.. It's an amazing piece. I advise everyone to go to their local stores and compare before purchasing. But I love it sooo much.. Better than Samsung, Sony, LG, or Sharp.. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.. And at this prices at Target, the lowest price I could find anywhere, it's a BUY BUY BUY~!!! Oh, and one final note.. Try hooking up your PC to this Beast.. You will be knocked out ~!! Looks like a 42" LCD for your computer.. just AWESOME.. and if you have a PS3, FORGET ABOUT IT~!!! it's VIRTUAL REALITY~! BEST AS IS BUY EVER FROM WALLY WORLD

    By Discount  May 27, 2008

    Pros: EXCELLENT ALL ROUND

Cons: STRANGE SETUP THAT TAKES TIME TO LEARN

My wife and I happened to be in Wal Mart and as always I stopped by the TV displays. This TV was marked down from $880 to $509 AS IS. It was plugged in and working great so we bought it. It works much better than by son's 26 in LCD and being olde...r my wife and I can now read the credits at the end of the movies. Read more Less

    Olevia 5421 I

By Steve  Mar 10, 2007 | 2 out of 6 found this Syntax Olevia 542I review helpful

    Pros: Good Value Good Sound

Cons: Terrible customer service. Glare issues with screen

I bought two of these. One arrived with crushed speakers. The other would never even power up. These units carry an in home service warranty. Thats good since no one sells or services them locally. These units weigh over 100 lbs. and shipping i...s very expensive if you have to send them in for service. No problem I thought I'll just call and have and an in house servce person take care of all these problems. Two huge problem purchases from a company who could care less about it's customers. These units had been stored in my warehouse for a month or so before I unpacked them. In the fine print the warranty states that while it is a 1 year warranty you have to register it within 30 days of purchase or lose the in home warranty service. I left several E-Mails and calls with Syntax tech support and got no response whatsoever. Luckily the retailer I bought these from omline had a 3 month return policy and I was finally able to unload these! Read more Less

    Would not buy again

    By M  Aug 6, 2007 | 0 out of 2 found this Syntax Olevia 542I review helpful

    Pros: Flat Screen

    Cons: Customer Service Issues

I purchased my TV in Dec 2006. I have had this black box that randomly appears on the screen since the day I received it. I have called and email customer service not one response. It is now July 2007 and the picture quality on the TV is very poor. D...istorted and Blurry. Once again I have contacted customer service. For 2 weeks I have been jockied around from Tech Service to Customer Service. I was told the main board needed replaced but it is on back order. Then told I could get a new unit but, they are on back order as well. They are now replacing my TV with a new model comparable to the 542I unit. Although it will take 3-5 days to process and probably another 10-14 days to ship. Neither the product or the service is worth the price I originally paid. Read more Less
