Living alone in a New York apartment, Sybil is tormented by flashbacks and visions of her extremely painful childhood. Unable to live a normal life, she meets Dr. Cornelia Wilbur (Joanne Woodward), a kindhearted psychiatrist who becomes committed to helping Sybil heal the incredible wounds that haunt her. Desperate to make Sybil understand her illness, Dr. Wilbur begins a series of treatments and uncovers the 16 personalities that make up the fractured personalities of Sybil. Forced to face unspeakable torture at the hands of her mother (Jane Hoffman), Sybil is slowly able to heal her inner self with the support, guidance, and love of Dr. Wilbur. The incredible 11-year odyssey of these two brave women is brought to the screen with powerful and deeply moving performances by Field and Woodward. Together they portray a deeply touching and inspiring true story of love and determination conquering pain and isolation.

    I originally read the book 4 years ago and it was very well written. Ever since then, I've been trying to find a copy of the movie so I could watch it. Then it cam on the Women's Entertainment channel. I watched it and it was even better than the ...book! Sally Field did a fantastic job portraying Sybil and all her personalities. I'd recommend this to anyone. Read more Less

    Pros: Fabulous acting, great screenplay, incredible story

    Cons: none!

    I think that this is such a monumental achievement in the art of film. This is just such an iconic work of art that should be held as a standard for other films to be judged by...to me..it represents a magical culmination of talent from such a great ...director, Mr. Daniel Petrie and an incredible screenwriter, who brought the story from book to film, Mr Stewart Stern and then the acting of both Sally Field and Joanne Woodward was so incredibly original and compelling, and the way they just seemed to have such a chemistry together, in the relationship that would develope between doctor and patient...It was such a work of art..and a statement as well, for the defense of such a misunderstood illness..It should be required viewing for anyone approaching the Psychology Realm...but also for anyone who wishes to see a great story of someone who was so tortured and who suffered so much...but who would also triumph over her condition and would eventually become whole again.. Sybil is the best drama of its kind...and even though the recent remake with Tammy Blanchard and Jessica Lange was certainly a worthy effort, i believe it was no comparison to this original Gem!...long may this movie be held in great esteem and may it hold a special place of honor in the ranks of great films of all time..
