The live album Live It Up gave David Johansen a surprise MTV hit with an Animals medley and he attempted to continue his success with Sweet Revenge. Unlike his previous albums, Sweet Revenge is driven by synthesizers, but Johansen hasn't abandoned hard rock. The synths add a stylish sheen to his slyly powerful songs, which have some of his cleverest lyrics and melodies. Overall, the record is his strongest since his debut.
