| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Elvis Presley's comeback recordings from the late '60s are generally regarded as some of the finest music he ever made, not only because they proved he could still be exciting, but because they're musically diverse and emotionally rich. That was evident on From Elvis in Memphis, the first record released from his landmark sessions of 1968 and 1969, and latter-day compilations like The Memphis Record made clear how deep those recordings were. Twelve years after The Memphis Record, the double-disc set Suspicious Minds was released, and it stands as the definitive overview of these sessions. All of the familiar hits are here, of course, but for collectors, what makes this essential is that it not only contains all the master takes, but it provides nine alternate takes of classics such as "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road," "Kentucky Rain," "Suspicious Minds," "In the Ghetto," and "I'm Movin' On." None of these are particularly revelatory, but they are interesting enough to be the icing on the cake on an exceptional collection. This is prime Elvis....the Elvis music I fell in love with as a kid...this is it. His absolute peak basically in his career. Such a varied collection of songs...such comtemporary and so...360 degrees on his movie soundtracks, it's unbelievable. Makes you think...I knew Elvis could sing like this....I knew it!:-)
The usual standouts are here, of course everything he recorded here in Memphis' American recording studios Jan-Feb 1969 is here plus outtakes, sweet:-) Suspicious Minds....In The Ghetto...Any Day Now....Dont Cry daddy...Kentucky Rain....very awesome collection of songs. They pretty much are more in a countryish rocking vein many times, as "True love travels on a gravel road" and "It keeps right on a hurtin" proves, the beautifully sung "I'll hold you in my heart" and "Without love"....you cannot go wrong! Other rockers "Power of my Love" and "Stranger in my own home town" really balance this compilation out. This is the ULTIMATE collection of these songs....they are all here from this lengendary session.
Summing it up....# 1 collection of Elvis in 1969, when the music got good again....no more lousy soundtracks, no more meddling Tom Parker in the way, just ELVIS in his own "hometown" of Memphis in Chips Moman's studio....this is real elvis, pick this up, is a must along with his 1976 recordings and the '71 "Elvis Country" songs.
