Rock quintet Surround Sound materialized in Geneva, IL, following the 2003 dissolution of the area punk band Slow Motion Massacre. Bobby Lord, Justin Park, Dave Stach, and Jake Anderson collectively decided to change their band's name and musical style after seeing Anderson's older brother Zack perform with his power pop outfit, the Velvet Velvet. Determined to undergo a complete transformation, the guys switched up on their instruments as well. Main songwriter Lord went from drums to vocals/guitar; Anderson traded bass for drums; Stach changed from lead guitar to bass; Park went from rhythm guitar to lead. Taking influence from the Beatles, Matthew Sweet, Teenage Fanclub, Superdrag, and more, the guys worked on crafting catchy songs that complemented a highenergy live show. Surround Sound became an official fivepiece two years after forming with the addition of Zack Anderson on rhythm guitar and keyboards, after the Velvet Velvet had broken up. With an average band age of 18, Surround Sound's debut fulllength, The Sun Is on Our Side, was issued in 2006.
