Director Burt Kennedy's Western is a bawdy, all-out parody that skewers every cliché the genre has to offer. There's Jason McCullough (James Garner), the sharpshooting stranger passing through town who becomes sheriff; the Danbys, a villainous gang who terrorizes the entire community; Prudy Perkins (Joan Hackett), the lily white maiden who wants to marry the sheriff; and the local drunk (the great Jack Elam) whom McCullough appoints as his deputy. Although McCullough manages to arrest Joe Danby (Bruce Dern), the rest of the Danby gang is set on busting him out of prison. Garner is utterly charming as the earnest hero of this entertaining tale, cool and calm as a cucumber; don't miss the scene in which he first imprisons Joe Danby in a cell without bars.

  • Overall:

    A Must See.......great movie.

By Denise Michelle  Mar 29, 2006

Pros: Not a boring moment in this film, very hilarious.

Cons: Made my belly hurt i laughed so much.

Well even though this movie was made in 1969, i was born in 1973, im 33 years old now saw it for the first time 2006. Looking at the cover i showed no interest. However my boyfriend said i had to see it that it was just so funny, but i still wouldn&#...39;t watch it(im not a james garner fan anyway) or so i thought i wasn't. After a month i got sick of hearing about it so i watched it..... well i fell in love with James Garner, and this movie. After i watched it i had to see it 2 more times that day..... And by the way i also own "Support Your Local Outlaw" also staring yours truely James Garner. I highly recomend anyone any age to watch these two films. Awesome just Awsome. Read more Less

I saw this movie a few weeks ago and let me tell me you it was funny. I wouldn't mind seeing it again. James Garner is terrific in this movie. They way he's always so calm, collective, and confident even during scenes where other characters are pani...cing makes this a great comedy. Also I loved the part about the jail with... well I'll let you find out about it. I would give it a least 4.5 stars. Read more Less
