The #1 Heroic Movie of All Time

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 11, 2003 | 2 out of 2 found this Superman (1978) review helpful

If you haven't seen Superman I, then you haven't wittnessed the most beloved heroic tale in the US either. For everyone that's had a loved on in battle, for everyone that romantically dreams of their hero, Christopher Reeve's real personality comes out as he portrays the ultimate SuperHero, Superman! MUST SEE!

    Irish Fan

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 21, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this Superman (1978) review helpful

I was seven years old when I first saw Superman: the Movie. It blew away, even moreso than Star Wars. I was absolutely flabbergasted by this, the most magical three hours of my childhood. It was an epic of all proportions ... brilliant characters, drama, effects, photography, story, romance, music, etc ... I even remember going to bed that first night and being unable to sleep because my mind had gone into overdrive, thinking about the movie I had just seen.

And then, I think I spent the following two years on an hourly basis humming the tune, wearing the custume and/or basing Superman stories around my lego collection.

What I found particularly entrancing about the film was it's original ending. Lois actually dies!!! How is our hero going to get out of this one?? He kisses her pale corpse, whimpers, hears the distant crackle of thunder, gives a Titan's roar and bolts towards the skies. Then he reverses time by flying around the world, defying his father's orders. Brilliant!!!

Some trivia: Interestingly, I first saw it on RTE 1, which is an Irish T.V channel. And apparently they were the first ever channel to play the full-lenght version.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 6, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this Superman (1978) review helpful

The classic first movie. A true epic. Then again, you should expect that when Mario(the Godfather Trilogy) Puzo is writing the story. The visual effects are outstanding. You almost believe that a man can fly. Excellent casting especially with Christopher Reeve as Superman and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor giving us his campy best. A film for all generations.

The answer to your DVD Player Not workin

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 20, 2001

An answer to the persons problem that is unable to get his DVD player to play the movie he wishes to play does not lie within the movie that was purchased. The problem is within the player. Different companies have started to produce movies with codes in them and if your player is too old it does not have the software inside it to read the movie. I have had the same problem. The only answer is to upgrade the software. The down side of the problem is that when you buy the software and take your DVD player in to have the software installed it is cheaper to simply buy a new player. So I can sya that the answer to your problem is to buy a new player and when doing it make sure that the player you purchase has the most recent software available inside of it. I can only say this because it happened to me. I have since taken my old DVD player and placed it in a place in my home as a second player knowing it will only play certain movies and my new player will play them all.

    SUPER DVD!!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 12, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this Superman (1978) review helpful

You put in the DVD, dim the lights and press play on the rmote control. The opening sequence starts and the curtains part to reveal the issue of Action Comics with the voice over from the boy, the camera pans, John Williams music lightly playing, the camera tilts to the clobe with the Daily planet banner on it and the camera arcs toward the moon and the music kicks in. "Bum bum", "bumta da bum bum" and that when something begins to stir inside of you, this is diffrent... The name ALEXANDER SALKIND comes racing at you in bright blue colors and a sound you never heard before swims around your ears, a whoosing sound, deeper and much richer than you have ever remembered it. This IS diffrent. It is immediately clear to you that a lot of care and love went into the transfer of this film onto DVD, and after you view this disc in its entirety Superman will never be the same again!

Eight extra minutes, three documentries, screen tests, deleted scenes, this has it all! A great DVD that exploits everything that makes DVD a superior format. Bright colors, blacker blacks, whiter whites, clear crisp image, sound that makes you melt all over! Wonderful! This is truly a DVD to own.

    Does this Disc work?

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 8, 2001

I couldn't get through the first 34 seconds of the first side before my player shut down. I tried this several times before I gave up and tried to access the cool documentaries on side 2. This caused my player to freeze. I took it back to the store I purchased it at and got a new copy. Then, I went through the same process again. Is anybody else having this problem? I tried to call Warner Home Video, and they (in not so many words) told me to blame the store that I bought it at. Too bad, because I was really looking forward to getting this great movie on DVD.

If you are a DVD fan and a fan of Superman, this is a must buy. I give 2 thumbs up for those who worked on the film transfer to DVD. I have never seen the movie look and sound so good. The Extras are fantastic. I loved the screen tests for the different roles in the movie. Even the 1st set of menus are 3D and makes you want to watch the movie.

    Superman The Movie(s)

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 17, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this Superman (1978) review helpful

Of course considering the progression of computerized animations and effects as we speak and live as of today; having to go back in time and see this movie and the other sequels, tells us how imperfect and primitive it was those days.

But come to think of it, (even 20 years later) . . . they had done better then than now as most movies of the same backdrop now a days spend millions and billions of dollars for great animated/computerized movies but have almost senseless plots and even abrupt endings that would tell us: "I paid just to see that?! There must be more to it? Perhaps a sequel will come out and satisfy my curiousity, maybe...just maybe."

That's where the business is now in the Film Industry! Make an expensive movie that would thrill everyone and mesmerize them with special effects. Little do many know that such movies of today have no souls . . . just balls!

Hence, I would say Superman, the movie and the later sequels were great classics. An imaginary character but with a soul that would make us think: "What if there really was...a Superman?"

    Good Effects, Stupid Plot

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 3, 2000 | 0 out of 1 found this Superman (1978) review helpful

In this 1979 classic action/adventure movie, a criminal mastermind has a plan to destroy Superman and ruin the world. I thought that the sequels were better but this was the one who started the sequels.

This movie begins in the planet Crypton. News of the planets possible destruction is forseen by superman's father. In an attemp to save his son, his father sends him to earth. Due to a difference in molecular structure, superman has super powers on earth. This movie has a great story line, as well as offers interesting theories in the field of physics and geology. A great movie.
