  • All Music Guide

Super Roots, Vol. 3 is about as different from Vol. 1 as you can get, made up of a single 33andahalfminute cut, "Hard Trance Away (Karaoke of the Cosmos)." This one solid blastass cut consists of a single hardcore riff for nearly the first ten minutes and then the same riff changes key goes up a step at the tenminute mark, and finally changes cadence at the 11minute mark. It moves in various ways (slowly, usually designated by a different kind of drum fill) before fading to silence before the cut officially ends. This is the Boredoms at their most monotonous, but then again, the riff progression has teeth and great drums, and its subtle change is hypnotic in a brutal but no less hedonistic manner.

Boredoms

Of all the artists in Japan's thriving noise-music community, the Boredoms undoubtedly had the most fun. Although their maniacally extreme cacophony was by no means accessible listening, it was underpinned by a gleeful sense of humor that helped them find a limited (but still surprisingly wide) audience among alternative rockers.
