Pros: Good songs

Cons: Could use more vocal variety

Sometimes on first, even second plays a record doesn't reveal those layers of sound & lyric well-hidden under the guise of " this is a rock record." Such is the case with Teri Falini's debut 'Sun Under Me' which will ...be released on the National Recorder label June 7th. Her songs explode with a weight and tenderness ostensib
ly missing from my ever-growing stack of CD's in the review cue. Songs like Fight Fire, The Good Life & the title track Sun Under Me show an artist not afraid to take bombastic risks juxtaposed against lyrics about the suburbs and the rules and expectations put upon women. She follows it up with the record's most affecting track Cut, which explores the epidemic of teens (mostly girls between the ages of 13-15) that cut themselves to alleviate the pain & pressures of growing up. It's refreshing to hear an artist not fearful to mix it up and throw in more than just the obligatory 'slow so
ng' (try 3 or 4)  like the 60's tinged Lick My Wounds and the touching Broken Man. The accompanying bio implies Teri hasn't been writing songs for very long. So being your ever-loving music critic, it's my duty to point out if I should even believe this or not. After considerable thought, two things I know for certain. One, if she hasn't it's not going to change my opinion of the record and she's someone to look out for. Two, this is an artist who derives her power from restraint rather than excess.   Read more Less
