    Post punk singles going (un)steady...

    That Joy Division never made a recording that isn't worth owning is an article of faith amongst post-punk fans. Substance includes the entire "Warsaw" Ep, plus indispensable (and previously unavailable) singles like 'Digital', the Aleister Crowley-q...uoting 'Transmission', and the near-hit 'Love Will Tear us Apart'. A nice overview of the band's transition from raw punk rock to a more dense, apocalyptic vision, Substance is both qualified introduction for the neophyte and essential collector's item.     early tracks are on occasion quite poor , and the version of 'she's lost control' is not a patch on the unknown pleasures version but all things considered this ain't too bad. Love will tear us apart and atmosphere make the album.
