Brother and sister duo Judd Maggie deliver sweetly emotional, delicately crafted pop on their debut album Subjects. Produced by Beck drummer Joey Waronker and his father, legendary producer Lenny Waronker, Subjects is a lowkey, but earcatching release with flourishes of folk, indie rock, and country that bring to mind nothing less than a canny mix of the Sundays and Fleetwood Mac. Primarily featuring Maggie's crystalline lead vocals, Judd also takes a few turns at the mic, showcasing his smooth, folky croon. Although the band itself is usually a duo, they expand the lineup here to include percussion by Joey Waronker as well as guitars, horns, and even a string section. The result is beautifully organic and only serves to frame the band's compelling songs.
