Pros: song are deep, poetic, meaningful, and incredible lyrics

    Cons: its not crunk

this album, wow, what can i say...nas's street's disciple is one of the best albums i ever heard, i wouldn't compare it to anything else he made. the first disc is full of deep songs, from the intro to 'you know my style'(which is... probably the only bad song), the mood is slow tempo and eclectic-like, i never heard nas come like this.this album is like a book just waiting to be read, and read over and over again, u find all types of different things every time u listen to it... i notice that this albums song arrangement, and songs period, are all telling a story, its real deep, so if u are an aspiring writer, or artist period, u will have to have this one in your collection. even if you're not either, and you want good music, with incredible production, and different too...this in my opinion is the best album made in the last few years, get it...u will keep on listening to it. the second disc, this gets more in depth with nas, and where he is at now, getting married n all, but he doesn't make just those type of songs (which are made in a creative way also), he speaks about everything thats anything, he even has a song/autobiography on rakim on this disc, a song with doug e fresh and ludacris, called virgo(ie they are all virgo's), this disc is creative as well. its so many good songs on here, u will love the album as a whole, incredible! cuts for the gangstaz, the females, the people who struggle, the people who are looking for salvation in life, this is an album made for people period...get it! now! NAS IS COMPLETE

    Pros: DISPLAYS LYRICAL GENIUS

    Cons: LACKS PRODUCTION VERSITILTY

NAS HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF THIS GENERATIONS BEST LYRISIST BUT A CASE COULD BE MADE THAT HE IS THE BEST OF ALL TIME MIGHT HAVE BEEN ANSWERED WITH THIS CD. IT IS WELL BALANCED AND SLAM REMY, LES, Q-TIP, AND OTHERS DID A MASTERFUL PRODUCTION JOB. I JUST... WISH HE COULD HAVE ADDED A SIGNATURE DJ PREMIER TRACK OR MAYBE EVEN PETE ROCK. WHO BY THE WAY, COLABORATED ON ONE OF THE BEST HIP HOP SONGS EVER PUT OUT, THE WORLD IS YOURS. I THINK ONLY THREE SONGS WOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN OUT OR REMIXED, BUT OVERALL I GIVE THE CD 4.5 STARS. GREAT JOB NAS!!!! Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Street's Disciple

  • All Music Guide

Ten years deep in the rap game, Nas unveiled Street's Disciple, an indulgent album that sprawls across two discs, freewheeling through a dizzying array of ace productions and thoughtful raps. The album is very much a continuation of its predecessor, God's Son: both helmed primarily by producers Salaam Remi and Chucky Thompson, both characterized by confessional, soulbearing raps, both overall uncompromising personal statements that make few concessions to the pop market, and both undoubtedly fascinating, if overindulgent. The difference is, Street's Disciple goes a step further, indulging all the more in the creative whims of Nas. And the result is nothing short of astounding, especially if you've followed Nas over the course of his first decade. Catchy hooks are few and far between here, granted, with most of the songs crafted as is they were freestyle raps. This works, though, because Nas benefits from outstanding productions, a peerless rap style, and an interesting backstory. The 2...5 productions here are all courtesy of longtime Nas collaborators Salaam Remi, Chucky Thompson, and L.E.S., with only a couple exceptions (Nas produces a couple himself). These guys know Nas better than anyone, and they deliver the goods: hardcore beats for the streets, usually laced with an inventive sample for a hook effect. These riffs offer Nas ample room to let loose, and he does precisely that on one track after another, often touching upon a specific theme yet doing so in a loose, freeassociative manner that highlights his talent for wordplay and storytelling. Within his raps, Nas often mines his own past, present, and future: for instance, he touches upon his heritage ("Bridging the Gap"), his impending marriage ("Getting Married"), his eventual death ("Live Now"), his influences ("U.B.R."), his most memorable female conquests ("Remember the Times"), and so on. All of this amounts to a rich album sure to dazzle true hiphop heads, who will find much to admire and study here, from the especially deep and twisted raps to the samplerich productions. On the other hand, all of this also amounts to an album that might prove relatively impenetrable to those who expect radioready singles and aren't already attuned to the legacy of Nas. Either way, Street's Disciple is another key album in that ongoing legacy, further evidence that Nas is back on track after falling off during the late'90s with I Am and Nastradamus. It's not a perfect album it's far too indulgent for that but its high quality and ambitious sprawl make for a powerful statement that Nas disciples will surely savor. - Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Nas

Heralded instantly as one of New York's leading rap voices, Nas expressed an outspoken, self-empowered swagger that rallied the streets of his city and elsewhere. Whether proclaiming himself "Nasty Nas" or "Nas Escobar" or "Nastradamus" or "God's Son," the self-anointed king of New York battled numerous adversaries for his position atop the epicenter of rap; none more n... Read more
