Pros: Jane,
Cons: Maybe love,Street Angel
This Cd is still awesome for the most part.Stevie didn't like it much, I think just because of the Meds she was on at the time but Jane, Kick It,Rose Garden,Just like A Woman and Destiny are Great...And Love is like a river and Listen to the rain ROCKOUT! Unconditional Love should have been a big hit.Blue Denim (about Lindsey)Docklands and the title cut are OK just cuz it's Stevie singing on them
I'm rather picky about this record. Some of it sounds like Stevie has really started to mature with the voice and in the music, then there's stuff that makes you doubt Stevie for even a second. Take 'Listen To The Rain', which seems very un"listen"able because of the guitar work overdone on it. Same with 'Kick It'. Stevie could've done those arrangements much better so I'm rather disappointed about it.
The title song involves David Crosby. Crosby sounds a lot like Lindsey Buckingham if you listen really well. 'Destiny' has lyrics similar to 'Enchanted'. 'Unconditional Love' is a song title many artists have used but Stevie, like them wrote the song and melody completely different. 'Rose Garden' is my favorite on the entire record.
There are 4 songs which do not involve Sharon and Lori as background singers, so I wondered if Stevie at the time was looking to stretch out a bit. Let's find out how "Trouble In Shangri-la" sounds when I get there...
As the release of 2001s "Trouble in Shangri La" happens, there are many interviews with Stevie Nicks regarding her career and her life. Her latest album being billed as her first in 5-8 years (depending on the source you read), her last album, "Street Angel", (released in June 1994) is billed as a 'long-forgotten' or 'career destroying' project. Ms. Nicks herself has admitted to not caring for the project for numerous reasons.
Since the album was not a big seller, it is fairly easy to find the price either discounted or on clearance now. Even more of a reason to buy the album.
There are several good songs on this project that are long-forgotten. The album starts of with the Mac-sounding "Blue Denim" which missed out on well-deserved AC airplay. Upbeat and nice to listen to. Great hooks.
The next few songs become increasingly dreary until "Listen to the Rain" - another upbeat song. After "Listen to the Rain", it all depends on your ear and what you like to hear. "Rose Garden" and "Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind" (the first single which charted around the Top 50) are worth several listens, as well.
This is an album that takes a few listens. It is also an album where you will find yourself skipping around to hear the good stuff. If you are a tried and true Nicks fan, you will be happy you bought the album. If you are not, you will be disappointed in much of the album, but will find some ear candy as well.
