Corey Taylor, the man, the myth, the man who made it big with his band Slipknot. Corey Taylor the greatest artist to grace the metal scene for quite some time. The dynamic voice that can change from a devilish roar to the most beautiful harmonic voic...e you would ever hear, with the greatest of ease. What more do I need say? Apart from the fact that I find it quite ironic that before he joined Slipknot he was in this band, Stone Sour. A band were he had never screamed before, but Slipknot on the other hand there is little but screaming. Corey Taylor made it big doing something so different from his prior band that you wouldn’t believe that it was him on the microphone. Corey Taylor resent work is much heavier then the original Stone Sour material, obviously due to his work with Slipknot. Not only much heavier in parts but also much softer as well for example, the beautiful song "Bother". Bother is one of many awesome tracks along with "Get Inside" and "Cold Reader", which make this album superb. Some Slipknot fans may be left scatching their heads upon hearing Stone Sour, but many, like myself, will be enthralled and amazed. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Stone Sour

  • All Music Guide

While Stone Sour formed as an avenue from which Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root could unleash their vision without upsetting the legions of Slipknot followers, it is in fact a much more impressive statement than many bands of its ilk. Those who heard "Wait and Bleed" during its radio days should be well aware that Taylor has the ability to actually sing, and on this release he does, bringing forth noticeable influences from Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. Surprisingly, Taylor is quite adept at this vocal platform, and sings with conviction, while Root plays guitar as only he can, with determined intensity. While the lyrical content shares a myriad of similarities with Slipknot, Taylor comes across as much less infuriated and this allows the songs themselves to settle smoothly, yet motivate the listener to feel the emotion being squeezed out. Many should be familiar with "Bother," which first was found on the Spider-Man soundtrack in the spring of 2002, but the so...ngs that stand out the most are tracks like "Orchids" and "Take a Number," which strike with surprising force for an alternative rock group. The most remarkable aspect of Stone Sour's self-titled debut is how the album grows on the listener with repeat plays. Where most hard rock albums wane after too many listens, Stone Sour instead gains strength, making this an excellent album and a much more accomplished effort than Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison's Murderdolls plaything. - Jason D. Biography

Stone Sour

Although Slipknot made its mainstream debut in the late '90s, singer Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root got their start a few years before in Stone Sour. Described as a cross between Metallica and Alice in Chains, the group was put aside when the two men joined Slipknot. In the spring of 2002, Root and Taylor got in contact with original guitarist Josh Rand and bassist... Read more
