Pro Reviews: Still Restless: The Lost Tapes
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews A rather odd release by the Skydiggers, but an understandable move by the talented band; they and their fans wanted to make their second release, Restless, available again, since by 1999, it was long out of print. The label which owned the tapes would not re-release it or sell the rights back to the band in order for them to release it independently. So, the next best thing to do was to release alternate versions of all the songs (except "It's Sunday Pouring Down Rain," which appears on Restless but not here). Lead vocalist Andy Maize did a great job assembling the project and wisely included three previously unreleased tunes from the same sessions; one new track, "Joanne," later appeared on the CD Just Over the Mountain in a different form. All in all, it's a great release for fans and newcomers alike. the Skydiggers' folk-rock sound blends incredible melodies with brilliant lyrics, and they are very tight as a band; even on these alternate versions, their playing is stunning. These re-recordings don't differ a great deal from the original album, but there are enough differences to keep fans on their toes. In fact, "Feel You Closer" is better on this release, due to Maize's amazing vocals and a much tighter arrangement. This is a great CD and a terrific reminder of just how good these songs are. For the record, the track "Restless" is retitled "It's Alright" for this release. - Aaron Badgley, All Music Guide |
