Pros: I didn't know Nia Long was on this joing
Cons: Um, not scary and unrealistic
I just bought this because it was a 2005 movie and it was pretty inexpensive. Whoa dude, why... During the opening credits I realized it looked very similar to a movie that I've seen already, and come to find out it was a remake. It was unrealistic, and I was upset I wasted my money.
Pros: Beautiful
Cons: None
I asked myself this question alot during this movie. The movie confused me in that way. On one hand it was a terrifying thrill ride. But on the other there were many art-filled scenes, such as the possession scene when she was hanging in the air.
So in conclusion, go buy this movie, no need to rent just buy.
The soundtrack is excellent, the story is intriguing. The special effects work well, and the acting is top quality.
I am not usually one that likes to watch movies about relious subjects. Especailly ones that are meant to scare a person. It makes someone think that religion is evil. This movie did a good job of freaking me out because I like scary movies....but the subject made it seem like what was happening to the girl was something evil. Well, if it is evil then so is the roots right? And I do not believe that. I personnaly think that movies should leave the religion subject alone. It causes to many questions and too many negative feelings towards a religious outlook.
You may not like it if you are looking to compare it with religous beliefs, otherwise it is very entertaining.
Upon first hearing of Stigmata, I was not very
interested. Having studied religion for quite some time, it
seemed this movie - like so many other movies on
religion - would tread on ground it would know nothing
about.
I was wrong.
Stigmata is a psycho-religious
thriller opening up some new dimensions to the shaky
ground on which the subject lies. Stigmata does exist in
the world today, but is usually falsified. This movie
openly shows the 'flesh' of the Church and its priests
and bishops. (As in, all are made flesh and therefore
are not free of sin.)It portrays the Church in a way
that could offend, and therefore should be viewed by
those with intelligence AND an open mind.
Those
who were bored by this movie or disliked it, simply
did not have the ability to understand it or the
depth of psychology which is embedded within
it.
The cinematography is flashy and keeps the movie
alive. Arquette plays her character well opposite Byrne
who is favorable as the faithless priest.
A
stunning film which leaves you thinking.
I recommend this movie for people who like
thrillers.. This movie is stunning, excellent..
Very very
good screenplay...
You might get offended
since there is bit of hatred towards GOD... Use of some
offensive words for GOD...
Let's make one thing perfectly clear first of
all: Stigmata is not a good movie. There are a number
of members of the production team who, quite
frankly, need a crash course in movie making. For example,
whilst the Director of Photography has done a good job,
the script writers, sadly, have not.
But let's
start with the few good points that make up Stigmata.
Firstly, the film looks superb, particularly on DVD. The
picture has been delibrately 'grayed' by reducing the
color levels. This has been done to make the blood,
when it comes, appear particularly vivid. Stigmata
also has a fair soundtrack which, although not
especially memorable, serves the movie well. The DVD version
also comes with a lot of extras, although the only
inspiring one is a documentary on the stigmata
phenomenon.
Now, however, we move on to the rather less brilliant
areas of Stigmata which, sadly, vastly outweigh its
good points. The script is awful, a mish mash of ideas
which never quite seem to gel. It's almost as if the
writers ran out of ideas halfway through and so
introduced the customary 'love interest' between Arquette
and the preacher, a ridiculous notion which makes the
movie even harder to believe. Fans of Stigmata will be
interested to know that a sex scene was actually cut out of
the final version, which is just as well as this
would have made it even more laughable.
The
movie takes too long to get going and takes too long to
end. The audience is left with more questions than
answers and is just as unlightened about the stigmata
phenomenon as before the film started. The performance from
the lead, Patricia Arquette, is reasonable but not
convincing, hardly surprising given the shoddy script she had
to work with. At the end of the movie, which I
watched with an open mind and indeed as a fan of Arquette
following the brilliant True Romance, I was left with one
lingering sensation: boredom.
Steer well clear of
Stigmata; it is an interesting concept but will not move
you to the edge of your seat. You'll be better off
getting a couple of hours sleep instead.
One of the creepiest, most controversial films I have ever seen! I must see for all horror film fans!
I like movies but to me the sound is one of the most important factors. Thats why I love the dvd format. If you have a decent system you can feel the nails being drove into the flesh. Well you have to expierence it for yourself. The only drawback was the ending (both of them) allthough I like the alternative better. Some of the deleted senes are great, like the knife.., Check it out.
You HAVE to watch the Director's cut of this movie. MUCH better than the "standard" version.
The soundtrack binds the action, villains, sweep of good verses evil characters and spirits into an enjoyable, suspenseful, hopeful comment on entertainment and touches of truth to ponder over later.
This movie is absolutely awesome. It's been a while since I've seen a movie with a meaning like this. I've seen it twice and plan on buying it soon I love it so much! =)
I'm a big fan of tales of possession; I think the lowest I could rate such a movie is 3 stars. That being said; this effort earns no more than three stars. Seeing Patricia Arquette get tortured gets boring after the fifth or so time, and at no point does this movie get scary or attempt to forward much of a plot, and the intermitent attempts of seriousness are underminded by superfluous gore. The ending is just plain terrible. Gabriel Byrne did a fine job; but that and supernatural ideas of the premise are the only thing this movie has going for it.
realy realy its realy good and very very good.
Although this movie has received some low reviews, I would have to say such marked reviews are misguided. When I watched this movie, I kept looking at my watch, hoping that the movie was not going to end. This movie is more intellectually engaging than it is action filled. Unfortunately, some people believe that action and special effects are what makes a movie. However, a serious critic takes into account all aspects of the movie. Sure, the majority of scenes are shot in relatively few locations, but that is for aesthetic value as well as dramatic effect. When the picture is taken as a whole, it is a very interesting and intellectually engaging film, and it is not deserving of the humiliatingly low reviews received (especially when other movie reviewers spell "scenes" as "seens").
Boring Boring Boring. It was cool when she talked like a man but that was like for only 1 minute
A first rate dud! I can't believe I spent the money to buy it!
Gabriel Byrne really shines in this movie ... had to watch it twice to fully grasp it but it was worth it
