S.M. knows how to make a good album...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 10, 2002

none of the songs is outstanding or groundbreaking stuff, but every song has something different to offer, and the way he puts 'em together just makes for a very entertaining & catchy album. i like the diversity on the album, there's a good mixture o...f light-hearted guitar pop (jojo's jacket), beautifully arranged melancholic tunes (church on white), and riff-oriented rock like the great single 'discretion grove'. and just as in pavement, malkmus simply knows how to get his throat around those songs to enhance their distinct feel. this album doesn't hit you straightaway, but grows on you with each spin, and every time the weirdly melancholic closer "deado" slowly dies down, the album suddenly seems way to short... The Best Pavement Album in the World...Ever!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 29, 2001

What a man. When first describing his new album to NME Malkmus made no daft self flattering boasts, and was honest enough to admit that his debut was pretty much Pavement, just without the rest of the band. And sure, it is, but was that ever such a... bad thing? If you listen to this album on public transport it can get embarrassing what with the laughing out loud at The Hook and Jo-Jo's Jacket. Marvellous. Read more Less

Jicks at least equal Pavement for fans!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 18, 2001

While they're all good, songs like JoJo's Jacket, Troubbble, Vague Space, & Jenny & the Ess-Dog make you wonder if you are still sad that pavement broke up, or happy because this is the result!

    better than you

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 15, 2001

Pavement but better. Malkmus again shows his mastery of language and the lyric in new explorations. Mellow, beautiful and funny. Few musicians are truly artists.. Stephen Malkmus is. This album is better than you.

    phenomenal

this songs on this album are unpredictable and experimental like any pavement album, but with a more accessible rhythm and pace. For someone who finds pavement a little too hard to follow, but likes the spontaneity and musical creativity of Malkmus, ...it's a great album. Read more Less

    Forget that first guy's review

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 28, 2001

It bothers me that the bleeding heart lo-fi fans can't accept their artists moving on and trying something new. Malkmus' album is excellent, every song remaining some sort of gem. It's fresh, narrative, easy-going and effortlessly intelligent, wry, a...nd heartfelt. It's a new groove (and equally excellent one) for Malkmus, and if hardcore Slanted or Sebadoh fans can't stomach it, tough luck. Read more Less

    Disappointing Solo Debut

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 26, 2001

I love Pavement, i first saw them supporting Sonic Youth in '91. Their last two albums were cool, their first "Slanted & Enchanted" was a classic so i was rather disappointed with this. It sounds like it was knocked together in about 5 mins. I wish i... hadn't bought it, i'd recommend buying something else, any Pavement albums you don't have, or Velvet Underground or Sebadoh would be a better choice. In fact Sebadoh III is a million times better than this and is up there with Pavement's "Slanted & Enchanted" as a truly great lo-fi LP. Anyway that's my opinion. Read more Less
