Signed and dropped in the blink of an eye, Motocaster also left this fine album in its infinitesimal wake. Borrowing equally from the North Carolina college rock camp (Superchunk, etc.) and from rockers like Jason and the Scorchers, Motocaster plied their brand of good-time rock roll with flair, finesse, abundant talent, and supercharged fun. Though drummer Jon Heames borrowed both his visual aesthetic and playing style from Keith Moon -- and the band themselves certainly utilized that straightforward, driving sound -- Motocaster lacked something the Who brought to the table, and that's fury; the kind of fury evident on Who's Next. Not to compare a smaller North Carolina club rock band to one of rock's most legendary outfits, which is unfair at best, but, although the music rocks and rollicks brilliantly, Bo Taylor's vocals show little fire, which is only of the only things Motocaster lacked. Sure, Stay Loaded doesn't offer much in terms of groundbreaking fare, but it was as radio fri...endly as a Black Crowes, but perhaps that's just a bit too bland when the receipts are totaled at the end of the night. - Patrick Kennedy, All Music Guide Read more Less
