  • Overall:

A high-flying hummer of an album!

    By Joe  Apr 12, 2003

Bowman's third solo album, and the first since he left the Lonesome River Band, is a winner. The new material is first-rate and was written by Craig Market, Wayne Winkle, Shawn and Gracie Lane, Jay Don Johnson, Dennis E. Todd, David Via, Tim Massey, ...Don and Tina Rigsby, Bowman himself and others. Songwriter Craig Market either wrote or collaborated on the writing of five contemporary selections, with "Rise Above" and "What She Didn't Say" being standouts. The title cut, "Starting Over," provides good advice for someone with a broken heart. The band picks up the drive potient, however, on the more traditional sounding "Lonely Quit Knocking On My Door," and "Stone Cold Blue." When the band lays into Tim Massey's novelty tune, "I'll Be Dogged," you're guaranteed to smile out loud.I like Bowman's singing, but I wonder if compression used in the mixing process doesn't accentuate his breathing a little too much between the vocal phrasings on this album. That aside, Ronnie Bowman sings with a great deal of honesty, feeling and emotion. The arrangements and presentation are hot and nifty. Dan Tyminski, Barry Bales, Jerry Douglas, Ron Stewart, Ton Rice, Tim Stafford, Aubrey Haynie, Mark Casstevens are a few of the guest artists helping out. Two cuts, Rise Above and Go Home, include Tom Roady's percussion in the mix. I was prepared to question its utility but find that it is a tasty complement to the songs, not annoying or distracting. Harmony vocals are added by Craig Market, Dan Tyminski, Garnet Imes, Steve Gulley, and Michael Hunt. "Starting Over" is a high-flying hummer of an album. The bluegrass vocals, instrumentals, arrangements, and song selection don't get much better than this. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now) Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Starting Over

  • All Music Guide

Between the albums he recorded with the Lonesome River Band and his three IBMA awards for male vocalist of the year, Ronnie Bowman has developed quite a reputation. Starting Over, his first solo effort after leaving the Lonesome River Band, will only add to his standing. The title is meant to evoke new beginnings, though many of the songs deal with love gone wrong for one reason or another. The singer tries to keep believing that a relationship will last in "What She Didn't Say," while the title track speaks of the need to start over even though the hurt remains. It's easy to draw a connection between these sad songs that Bowman has chosen and his then-recent divorce. The driven "Lonely Quit Knockin' on My Door" paints a portrait of a forlorn man, while "Stone Cold Blue" tells the tale of a no-good woman out running 'round. Although the subject matter may seem a bit of a downer, the accompaniment keeps one's spirits afloat. One of the advantages of recording for Sugar Hill is the numbe...r of high-profile musicians who kindly lend their talents to a labelmate's album. Mandolinist Dan Tyminski, dobroist Jerry Douglas, and fiddler Ron Stewart are just three of the many names who inject lots of energy into these songs, providing the perfect backdrop for Bowman's forceful vocals. While it may have been more accurate to call this effort "Getting Over It," Bowman and his musically gifted friends have crafted a fine album. - Ronnie D. Biography

Ronnie Bowman

North Carolina-born Ronnie Bowman sang gospel music with a family group from the age of three until his late-teens and is now equally effective singing traditional bluegrass tunes as he is voicing songs by contemporary singer/songwriters. He first came to the public's attention as the vocalist and bass player in the Lonesome River Band alongside Sammy Shelor, Dan Tymins... Read more
