I have to say it was as good as going to one of their concerts. I have seen them 4 times this last year (Goleta's Living Room twice, Ventura's Nicholby's, and Los Angeles Warped Tour), and they are great. For their first major record label debut CD, ...they will make waves with it. Great songs are "Stuck In America," "Bouncing Off the Walls," "Saying Goodbye," "Pretty Girl," "How Does It Feel," and untitled hidden acoustic track are all really, really great. The other tracks inbetween those tracks are good too, but I like upbeat music currently. The album sounds like the upbeat Green Day/The Ataris type, with a Third Eye Blind massive hits CD (TEB had 7 hit songs on their Self-Titled CD), and a blend of humor and darkness with some of their songs. And if you like what you hear on the CD, then you will like them live because they sound exactly the same as their CD (they aren't crappy live like Red Hot Chili Peppers). Also they are very down to Earth, I talk to them at every concert I go to and they don't turn down their fans on autographs. Oh yeah (to the band if reading), what happened to Taco Bell in Goleta after the show, it was closed when we left at the sametime as you. (To Band of how Tim remembers me:) Chris the Sub-Urban transportation guy for Carpenteria even though I live in Ventura. Read more Less

Sugarcult's debut disc is a quasi sugar-coated power pop album with punk overtones and a healthy dose of self-effacing humor. Escapism, skepticism, and a devil-may-care view of the world around them are the primary themes that weave their way into the lyrics on this high-energy stripped-to-the-bone collection by this frisky So-Cal quartet. As evidenced in the fiery anthem "Stuck in America," vocalist Tom Pagontta joyfully proclaims "everyone's talkin' 'bout blowing up the neighborhood/all I ever wanted to do was get away." "Saying Good-bye" is a pathos-filled paean of teenage heartbreak with an explosive chord progression so familiar that documenting it would seem like an accusation of plagiarism, which, in rock roll of this nature, is an exercise in futility. "Bouncing Off the Walls" is yet another joust at the perils of romance, only this time the protagonist dips into his parent's cocaine stash to relieve the pain. On Start Static, Sugarcult has mastered the don't-bore-us-get-to-th...e-chorus approach to near perfection. - Tom Semioli, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Sugarcult

The Santa Barbara, CA, rock quartet Sugarcult took their name from a moniker that lesbian neighbors who lived next door to the band (singer/guitarist Tim Pagnotta, guitarist Marko 72, bassist Airin, and drummer Ben Davis) called themselves. Although the band cites such '70s punk songsmiths as Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello as major influences, Sugarcult's sound is pure ... Read more
