Synopsis: Stargate (1994)
Synopis: In this visually creative space adventure from the team that would go on to give the world INDEPENDENCE DAY and GODZILLA, a timid, glasses-wearing Egyptologist (James Spader) uncovers an ancient portal to another planet and is dispatched there forthwith--along with blundering, clodfooted government troops (led by Kurt Russell). The downtrodden populace they encounter, ruled by godlike, androgynous King Ra (Jaye Davidson, in his first role after becoming a star in THE CRYING GAME), must be led to literacy and freedom; Ra must be defeated; the intellectual must find his machismo; and our boys must return to Earth.Features: Stargate (1994)

STARGATE
, February 27, 2003Reviewer: analuisasoy - See all analuisasoy's reviewsIn a time where war seems inevitable, it's a relief to watch a film that entertains the better side of humanity and that's exploration. Having recently purchase the "Ultimate Edition" DVD, it was very interesting to compare to two versions of the film. I never saw the "Director's Cut" until now and I like this version better. I thought for the most part it explained the military's perspective of the stargate clearer, as well as develope Kurt Russell's character. I know that most people like James Spader playing the role of a villian,(which he's good at), but I personally like his role as the "Good Guy" in this film. He gave a good performance playing the role of a curious explorer wanting to understand the nature/meaning of the Stargate. And unlike STAR TREK, where every alien seems to speak perfect English, what a relief to see a more realistic set up where the main characters really make an effort to communicate with an alien race. The sound quality of this DVD is AWESOME and I also enjoyed the extra features of the "Behind the scenes" and the documentary of the author, (sorry I can't remember his name), of the book, "Chariot of the Gods". I wish that this segment could of been a little longer as I found the subject matter very fascinating! I give this movie a 4-star instead of 5 because I do feel that the villian Ra could of been a little more defined. Though I do love what the creators of this film did for the "Look" of the film. The idea of taking an ancient culture and giving a Sci-fi flare is what gives this film it's unique style. All in all, an enjoyable film & a worthwhile purchase of this particular DVD.
