The first rrole-playing game based in the Star Wars universe finds players controlling a three-party team from a third-person perspective. The setting takes place 4,000 years before the first Star Wars film, where the Jedi and Sith number in the thousands and are involved in a war that could upset the balance of the Force. Players choose from a variety of races before they begin, including humans, droids, Wookiees, and Twil'leks, with classes in Bounty Hunter, Scoundrel, Jedi Guardian, Scout, and Soldier.

The journey will span ten worlds as players ultimately decide on a path of good or evil, from the confines of the Jedi Academy on Dantooine to the forests of Kashyyyk, the Sith realm of Korriban, and the desert planet of Tattooine. BioWare moves away from the interface used in the Baldur's Gate series to create a new turn-based combat system using the 3D engine. Mini-games include riding on a swoop bike, battling from behind a gun turret, and other events that offer players a diversion from the main story line.

As players grow in ability during the course of adventuring, they can return to their main vessel, the Ebon Hawk, to train, repair weapons, or to swap members in and out of their party. The Ebon Hawk also serves as the primary means of transport between worlds. Knights of the Republic is exclusive to the Xbox console at the time of its release, with a PC version of the game available in 2003. Both games feature interfaces and settings unique to the platform they appear on. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

one of the best xbox games

Star Wars KOTOR is one of the best Xbox games available and the best Star Wars game out there. The story is expansive and engrossing. The graphics are in places superb (especially the reflection off the armor suits) and are overall very good (but n...ot the best out there). The movies are great, especially the scenes of the giant Sith battleship silently orbiting Taris. The sound is great - all of aliens have their own realistic voices unique to their races, voices fade as you walk away, or sound muffled if the person talking to you isn't facing you. The controls are pretty good; the semi-turn based fighting can be annoying, but fighting isn't always the focus of the game. The environments are vast and plentiful, as are the items you can pick up and use. There are multiple side missions that are often as much or more fun than the main mission. Characters are well-drawn and detailed. My main character wears a special visor, battle armor, energy shields, and two lightsabers, one in each hand. All of this combines to make KOTOR an outstanding game that is more like an interactive epic movie experience than "just a game." Read more Less

amazing... and i don't even like rpg

By sans  Sep 15, 2003 | 6 out of 6 found this Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic review helpful

this is one of the best console games i have ever played, and i don't even normally enjoy RPG's. there are a few minor flaws, but even so, this is game is addictive, fun and has tons of replay value. first the faults: 1.) limited character... options. you only have a few different faces and other options to choose from to create your character. it would be nice to be able to customize your main player better. 2.) graphics are a little rough around the edges. overall the graphics are nice but not special. there is some blockiness and not all the animations are crisp. 3.) control of party members is sometimes frustrating. if you run into a corner, somtimes your party members will block you in and you will have to switch to them, move them out of the way and then switch back. also, sometimes your party members will get stuck on a corner of a building somewhere and you will have to wait a little while for them to get unstuck and catch up. 4.) long running distances. sometimes, especially on tatooine, there are huge open spaces that you will have to traverse back and forth in order to complete certain tasks. that can be a little boring.other than those minor flaws, this game is quite enthralling. the plot is great (and movie-worthy), the depth of play is incredible, the fact that you can play as light or dark side jedi is a nice touch, and there are plenty of fun side-quests. all-in-all, a great game that will give most people 100+ hours of gaming fun. Which, by the way, is the wrong way to play KOTOR. There are dozens of side quests you might choose to undertake. There are mini-games here as well, like Swoopbike racing, arena fighting, or a collectable gambling card game called Pazaak. Read more
