Edward J. Olmos rightfully earned an Academy Award for best actor in his portrayal of high-school math teacher Jaime Escalante. The story takes place in East Los Angeles, a poor, brutal, and predominately latino district of the gigantic city.Escalan...te was a computer engineer who shelved his own career in an attempt to teach a class of struggling students. Expected only to learn basic arithmetic, Escalante raises the level of expectation on his pupils and prepares them to take a journey into the world of Calculus. Though Jaime's rigorous drilling, the eighteen members of the First AP Calculus class of Garfield High School realize that they are capapble of anything they put their minds to, despite racist skepticism from school testing officials.Stand and Deliver is a proud film, suggesting that hard work and perserverance are virtues still alive in youth if given the chance.
