    DMB Light

By Gabriel  May 11, 2005 | 4 out of 5 found this Stand Up review helpful

Pros: Its a new DMB album

Cons: Its not what you might expect

There is nothing wrong with doing something different, and God knows that I respect DMB for trying something new……but you know what, this is easily the weakest album that they have released. With Everyday I was worried that DMB was walking the line... of being a bit too poppy, but with Stand Up they have jumped over that line and the result is something that just doesn’t feel very Dave Matthews. Not to say that Stand Up is terrible, because it is not, but when your talking about a band of the caliber of Dave Matthews you might expect a little more. Yes, this album will grow on you with more listening, and believe me I have already put it through its paces, but that doesn’t change the bottom line which is that DMB has made much better music in the past. The slow, plodding pace that many songs on this album take just make me cringe a bit, as does the overproduced poppy sound. There are standouts, American Baby Intro, American Baby, Smooth Rider, and Hunger For The Great Light are some of the best this disc has to offer. In the end, there is good music on this album, but DMB has always been above good in my book so I cannot help but feel a bit disappointed. DMB is one of the finest bands of our time so hopefully they will rebound from this somewhat disappointing album and turn in something just a bit more up to their standards in their future. A musician's view

By Jon  May 11, 2005 | 3 out of 3 found this Stand Up review helpful

Pros: Awesome new sound, great feel

Cons: May take a few listens to fully love it

OK, speaking as a musician, I get annoyed when I hear people say, "It's not the same thing as Crash or Remember Two Things or Under The Table..." because it SHOULDN'T be. If you want those songs, check out those albums, or Live at R...ed Rocks, Listener Supported, Central Park, Live at the Gorge, Live at Luther College, etc, etc, etc. Musicians are supposed to play what they feel...and as we grow as humans, our emotions and feelings grow with us. DMB has done an awesome job of producing an album that is about where they are in life now, and that's admirable. They aren't Creed, who makes the same album over and over again their entire career. This is an album of great musicians making great music. If you want to hear "Crash Into Me" again, just find someone with bootlegs...I probably have 25 versions of the song myself. Give this album a few listens, and if you don't get it, well, try to realize where they are in life, and appreciate it for what it is. Read more Less

Stand Up..better than average pop...but for dmb?

By Daniel  May 5, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this Stand Up review helpful

Pros: Very listenable..wide variety of styles present

Cons: The pop setting just doesn't do these guys justice

Stand up is an eclectic collection of pop, rock, folk, and r&b. The sound quality...ie mixing/production is excellent with a few interesting audio effects, but not so much that you lose the music. In terms of the songs themselves, the writing is dece...nt...almost good even for pop music, but a bit weak overall for Matthews. When you've done what DMB has done, there is a higher standard. Still, the album is enjoyable, and it seems as if the band is channeling the "jam" aspect that helped to fuel their rise to popularity into their live trax collections and life shows. Still, I would have liked to hear a bit more of it in this album. Overall, not bad. Ultimately, when a band has been together as long as DMB, some evolution will take place, and "Stand Up" certainly conveys that evolution, although it leaves the listener with a bit of uncertainty as to where that evolution will lead. Not the same

By aa  May 9, 2005 | 1 out of 2 found this Stand Up review helpful

Pros: eh, wish there was something

Cons: electric guitar, tried to hard...nuff said

Seems like Dave has forgotten how to write music. The stuff he keeps coming out with is not what I use to love to hear. Remember Two Thing, Under the Table, Crash and even the one after Crash (the name of it is escaping me) where great albums. Seems ...like he has gone away from his accoustic guitar and its all about electric stuff. I just don't find it enjoyable anymore. His songs aren't fun and they don't grab you. In the earlier cds you knew the song was going to grab you and just make you happy. It made you want to go out drinking on a summer day. Now all he does, he sing about the world and its problems, i don't want to hear that. Each of his new songs, I am waiting for the point the songs just gives you extra bounce, that chill down your spine, his recent stuff seems to get away from that. Seems like he has to much time on his hand and just tries to write something. Barely hear a decent sax or drunks or bass and the electric guitar needs to go. Give me Granny, Two Step, Seek Up any of those and I'll be having a ball. If Dave needs to get drunk, smoke something and just write stuff then do it. Please don't try to become something you aren't. Or worse case, this is what you are and what you orginally wrote wasn't the real you. Please don't change, go back to your great hits. Doesn't seem like there is any life in his music anymore is what I am trying to say! Read more Less

    One of the best

    By Abby  Sep 30, 2005

Pros: Awesome music, good beats, great lyrics

Cons: nothing, it is a great CD

Stand Up is definently one of the best Dave cd's yet. I can listen to the entire cd over and over again...the beats are great, as are the lyrics. Props to Dave Matthews Band for coming out with another great hit, because they've definently do...ne it again. And by the way their Stand Up Tour was amazing... Read more Less

Pros: The CD is not blank

Cons: Everything you like about Dave's music is gone

First of all I love Dave's music.I have followed the band for over 10 years.I have never shelved a new DMB album until this one. The new producer is not a fit. There is way to much looping and sampling going on. The idea of sampling the guy'...s in this band to produce new songs is a horrible way to take this kind of talent.I watched the DVD and listened to what the band had to say about the tracks, but take a good look in their eyes you will see the same look they had when they put out Everyday. We all know what the band thought of that one. Number one this is a Jazz band that plays rock and pop music. The cats in this band can smoke just about any on around. When you destroy the group element of improvisation at the writing level and at the recording level, you get this backing track for bad hip hop songs sound that just does'nt do the guys justice. Im all about new sounds and new directions but this is'nt new is just tierd, I really believe they should have waited a while before making a new record. This one sounds tierd and uninspired. Sorry Dave this ones heading to the storage bin. Read more Less

Pros: great new songs from dave

Cons: it might take a few listens to fall in love with

I am a dave freak so I was really looking forward to this album to arrive. I had to listen to it a few times to really fall in love with it but I have. I also love the dave and friend bootlegs, all sorts of covers, I wish they would put some of those... out too!! Read more Less

    C'mon Dave!

    Pros: Good Rainy Day Music

Cons: Lack of melody driven music and instrumentation

I understand people's logic when they say you need to listen to this album a few times before you sympathize with it. But honestly, that might work for the Daveheads or the DMB die hards but not for the general people who listen to DMB for their ...cool, often upbeat melodies and musicianship. This album makes me think of a lonely guy sitting at a bus stop in the rain, and maybe he's a cool homeless guy who occasionally dances in a puddle or two but that's seemingly what I get out of this album from a visual standpoint. I don't mind melancholy in music but at least make the music upbeat. Speaking of melody, where is it? DMB's songs are usually derived from a cool guitar rhythm/melody but in this album I can't really find any songs to hum along to. American Baby is cool melody-wise at first but it get's mundane after the first minute. DMB has changed quite a bit from their traditional cool nursery rhyme style songs and has now become a little dark and maybe even coffee shop adult contemporary - yikes! Read more Less

A cross between "Everyday" and "Some Devil"

    By Anders  May 17, 2005

Pros: The good songs are really good.

    Cons: Not many new "classics"

When Dave Matthews released "Everyday", I had blinders on. DMB could do no wrong, and after every album prior, why would I think differently? So I embraced it, holding onto tracks like "The Space Between", and "If I Had It Al...l", thinking: You've done it again Dave! Then I heard the abandoned "Lillywhite Sessions". I could have been listening to a "new classic" like "Grey Street" and instead I get "I Did It"? I saw the reality of the album and was a bit dissapointed. Again, it offered some good new music but when "Busted Stuff" was released IT reminded me more of a true DMB album than did "Everyday". Dave released "Some Devil" and at this point I approached it matter of factly. I had heard "Gravedigger" and liked it, but as for the rest of the album I would have to see. It took some getting used to. Not every song jumped out at me, and I listened to the album a few times before I admitted it really was very good. That being said, Stand up is a lot like those two. It DOESN'T sound like a typical DMB album. It DOES take some getting used to. The good songs are REALLY good, in my oppinion: American Baby (intro and song), Old Dirt Hill, You Might Die Trying, Steady As We Go, Stolen Away On 55th And 3rd, and I'll add Hello Again (though it's much better live). Already, that's enough good songs to make an album worth buying, and most of the songs I've ommitted are not terrible, just not AS good. Granted there will be three or four songs I'll probably skip over while listening to the CD, But Most CDs have songs like that regardless of who you're listening to. There is no "Crash" on this album. There is no "Ants Marching". There aren't as many lyrics on this album as in the past. They HAVE discovered a new way of writing. So long as they do so, I'll keep listening to them...Because the good songs...are REALLY GOOD. Read more Less

    Pros: Great Summer Album

    Cons: none

This album is special. Give it a chance by listening to the songs a few times and on random. The songs slowly grab your attention and you'll find yourself playing some of them over and over. Great CD to take on a summer road trip! Roll your wind...ows down and enjoy! Read more Less
