    DMB Light

Pros: Its a new DMB album

Cons: Its not what you might expect

There is nothing wrong with doing something different, and God knows that I respect DMB for trying something newÂ…Â…but you know what, this is easily the weakest album that they have released. With Everyday I was worried that DMB was walking the line... of being a bit too poppy, but with Stand Up they have jumped over that line and the result is something that just doesnÂ’t feel very Dave Matthews. Not to say that Stand Up is terrible, because it is not, but when your talking about a band of the caliber of Dave Matthews you might expect a little more. Yes, this album will grow on you with more listening, and believe me I have already put it through its paces, but that doesnÂ’t change the bottom line which is that DMB has made much better music in the past. The slow, plodding pace that many songs on this album take just make me cringe a bit, as does the overproduced poppy sound. There are standouts, American Baby Intro, American Baby, Smooth Rider, and Hunger For The Great Light are some of the best this disc has to offer. In the end, there is good music on this album, but DMB has always been above good in my book so I cannot help but feel a bit disappointed. DMB is one of the finest bands of our time so hopefully they will rebound from this somewhat disappointing album and turn in something just a bit more up to their standards in their future. A musician's view

By Jon  May 11, 2005 | 3 out of 3 found this Stand Up review helpful

Pros: Awesome new sound, great feel

Cons: May take a few listens to fully love it

OK, speaking as a musician, I get annoyed when I hear people say, "It's not the same thing as Crash or Remember Two Things or Under The Table..." because it SHOULDN'T be. If you want those songs, check out those albums, or Live at R...ed Rocks, Listener Supported, Central Park, Live at the Gorge, Live at Luther College, etc, etc, etc. Musicians are supposed to play what they feel...and as we grow as humans, our emotions and feelings grow with us. DMB has done an awesome job of producing an album that is about where they are in life now, and that's admirable. They aren't Creed, who makes the same album over and over again their entire career. This is an album of great musicians making great music. If you want to hear "Crash Into Me" again, just find someone with bootlegs...I probably have 25 versions of the song myself. Give this album a few listens, and if you don't get it, well, try to realize where they are in life, and appreciate it for what it is. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Stand Up

  • All Music Guide

The Dave Matthews Band decided to team up with a very different producer for Stand Up Mark Batson, who earned his reputation with modern RB and hiphop records by the likes of India Arie, Joe, Beyoncé, and Seal. This doesn't result in an extreme makeover but instead puts a gentle gloss on the band's sound that renders it sleek and muted. Batson produces the DMB as he would any other record by keeping the mixes relatively spare and open, cutting up the rhythms in the computer, and polishing it all so it glistens. It's much warmer than Glen Ballard's makeover on 2001's Everyday, even if some of the cuts here appear to be pieced together in the studio. Matthews pulls away from the introspection of both Busted Stuff and Some Devil, occasionally reviving the humor that spiked his earlier work. The resulting album may not be to everybody's taste some fans will surely miss the loose jams that characterized DMB's '90s work but it is an intriguing change of pace for the group. - Stephen Thom...as Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Dave Matthews

The South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews formed the Dave Matthews Band in Virginia in the early '90s. Featuring Matthews, Stefan Lessard, Leroi Moore, Boyd Tinsley, and Carter Beauford, the group's music presents a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. The band built up a strong word-of-... Read more
