Based on Stephen King's novella THE BODY, director Rob Reiner's STAND BY ME is the disarmingly tender and subtly sublime story of four kids on the precipice of early adulthood who embark upon a quest. There's Gordie (Wil Wheaton), the intelligent, creative one with the obviously bright future. His best buddy, Chris (River Phoenix), hardens his image in order to hide the pain from the physical abuse he endures at home, all the while harboring the hope of escaping that image. Rounding out the foursome are Vern (Jerry O'Connell), the pudgy tagalong, and Teddy (Corey Feldman), a loyal and funny but troubled kid with a death wish.

When the four boys hear about a dead body 20 miles down the railroad tracks from their small Oregon town, they clandestinely set upon the unwieldy journey to lay eyes on this rare find. Amid numerous misadventures, Gordie, Chris, Vern, and Teddy savor what may be their last chance to revel in the simple life of children; around the corner is a future that could tear them apart, not to mention a tough teen gang who desires local fame by finding the body first. Enhanced by excellent performances and an engaging plot, STAND BY ME ranks among the best of the myriad coming-of-age films to dot the 1980s cinematic landscape.

Stand By me was the most excellent movies that I have ever seen. It's like seeing it now that you are in the 23rd century makes you wanna go back to the 80's and meet the characters in the story and the real-life actors. This movie will make ...you wonder what it was like to search for a dead body wit your three closests friends and take that chance on just getting close to the on a classical trip. I give Stand By Me a 5-star movie because this movie to me is drama, comedy, and suspense all in one movie. To see Corey Feldman playing this death wise desire kind of kid that is so handsome and dirty talking in this movie is awesome. But to also see the hard, tuff, bad boy leader of them all; River Phoenix is priceless. The character that River brings is so great that it makes you wanna be in the movie and stand by him throughout it. Then you see Jerry O'Connel the fat, scaredy cat of them all! What a laugh of joy and happiness. And of course, the cute, shy looking walkin', talkin', cute-faced one; Wil Wheaton! OMG! He is so cute! In the movie he seemed very quite and weird to people. Or to some people he was just John Cusak's little brother. Well, he was 25% life of the four boys. I will always love all of them and I will always dedicate this awesome movie to the one and only River Phoenix. Rest in Peace. Read more Less

    Pros: A great coming-of-age tale

Cons: Though not enough of a bonus disc

This film was culled from the novella collection by Stephen King called "Different Seasons". It's full title was "Fall From Innocence; The Body". It told the story of four twelve-year old boys who embark on a trek through the ...Maine wilds searching for the body of another child who'd been killed while walking the train tracks. The film directed by Rob Reiner and written by Raynold Gideon and Bruce A Evans, stuck faithfully to King's tale and is now presented here as a deluxe collectors edition. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a Commentary Track from the three surviving stars Wil Wheaton, Jerry O'Connell and Corey Feldman. This whould have been interesting in hearing what they remembered of the film and just having a bonus disc of the Ben E King song doesn't cut it. There should be much more to this. Stick with the original release version instead. This should be a message to the studios to clean out their vaults and load Deluxe packages with tons of extras especially the Extras stingy Paramount films. Read more Less
