Sponge is a Detroit-based alternative hard rock band featuring vocalist Vinnie Dombrowski, Mike Cross, Joe Mazzola, Tim Cross, and Jimmy Paluzzi. For their 1994 debut Rotting Pinata, the group adopted the sound and image of Stone Temple Pilots, which resulted in the alternative rock hit "Plowed" in early 1995. "Molly," the second single released from Rotting Pinata, was also an alternative and album rock radio hit. Though the follow-up Wax Ecstatic was released in 1996, it was another three years before Sponge's third album New Pop Sunday appeared.
