Essentially a joke band fronted by singer Max Splodge (also a drummer), Splodgenessabounds was formed when Splodge met guitarist Pat Thetic Von Dale Chiptooth Noble after a short stint in Alien Sex Fiend in 1978. The two initially formed a duo called the Faber Brothers and played at a holiday camp in Sussex, but moved to London after being fired. Splodgenessabounds took shape in 1979, with an official lineup of Splodge, Thetic, vocalist Baby Greensleeves (Splodge's girlfriend), guitarist Miles Runt Flat, bassist Winston "Donkey Gut" Forbe, Whiffy Archer on paper and comb, Desert Island Joe Lurch Slythe, and someone's dog. Early in 1980, bassist Robert Rodent joined, and Flat departed. That same year, the group scored a fluke U.K. hit with the song "Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps Please," which was followed by a self-titled debut for Deram in 1981. Its subject matter ranged from juvenile novelties to obsessions with bodily functions (as indicated by song titles like "Blow Away Like a Fart in a Thunders" and "Wiffy Smells"). Disagreements with their label led the band to sign with Razor in 1982 under the shortened name Splodge; the lineup now consisted of Max Splodge, guitarists Ronnie Plonker and Tone Tone the Garden Gnome, drummer Poodle, and bassist Smacked Arse O'Riordan. The album In Search of Seven Golden Gussets was released that year, telling the story of a quest for legendary lingerie items. However, Splodge's sophomoric, frequently unsuccessful jokes were beginning to wear thin, and an overabundance of lineup changes finally took their toll. Splodge released a solo single, "Phut Phut Splodgenik," and joined political punksters the Angelic Upstarts in the late '80s. Meanwhile, a "live" album (the crowd noises are obviously overdubbed) by Splodgenessabounds entitled Live and Loud was released in 1988, featuring old ("I Fell in Love With a Female Plumber") and new ("Michael Booth's Talking Bum") material.
