Earth Wind & Fire's Spirited Imagination At Work

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 19, 2006

Pros: A Superb Example Of Popular Appeal And Musical Connectivity

Cons: A Little Short I Suppose

The main highpoint of this recording is Philip Bailey's title song, likely his best performance with Earth,Wind And Fire-more like a prayerful ritual then a pop ballad.Of course the main reason is the song is a straight out musical uelogy to depar...ted arranger Charles Stepney. The result?'This 1976 release has a far more slick production style then Earth Wind & Fire's previous recordings-two of the albums best songs-the triumphant "Imagination" and "Earth Wind & Fire" while beutiful songs are layored with heavy orchestrations, horns and vocal arrangements, even as Maurice and Philip sing wistfully about 'mother earth','natures children','magic mirrors' and 'what imagination can do'.It starts out with "Getaway"-one of the bands major 70's hits and a superb example of their signiture funk sound."On Your Face" and "Saturday Night" stay in the same area while, with their chuncy guitars and striking horns while the firey instrumental "Biyo" gives Larry Dunn a chance to shine on his newfound interest in synthesizers.Of course the closing "Burnin' Bush" is the most telling here next to the title track.Every song on 'Spirit' is extremely strong, even if slickly produced and even though Earth,Wind & Fire always had a spiritual connection in their music this album is the most obviously religious and/or inspiring. And a wonderful example of their close knit musical relationship in a time of such tragedy. It Lives Up To The Title

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 29, 1999

This album is average. The reason behind the average vote is because durung the making of the album, EWF lost the centerpiece of their sound: arranger Charles Stepney. The album is still entertaining, though, but has it's weak points. The instrumenta...ls don't live up to usual EWF expectations, and the lyrics behind "Saturday Night" are silly. The crown jewels of this album is the opening song "Getaway" (went #1 R&B), "Imagination" and "On your Face", a happy song to wake you up in the right mood. The album definetly lives up to it's title SPIRIT. The song "Earth Wind and Fire" describes how the elements of life unfold in our lives. The intro in "Burnin' Bush" takes you right back to the black Baptist church. "Burnin' Bush" really is a beautiful song that can touch the heart if you listen closely. Maurice does an excellent job melting his voice over the music, mixing gospel and soul into the songs. And, of course, the title cut, led by Philip Bailey, truly puts you into a spirital, prayerful mood.Though I say the album is average, it's definetly worth having. Philip and Maurice sing their hearts out, and you get to experience the excellence of one of the greatest pop keyboardist of all time, Larry Dunn. Read more Less

With That's the Way of the World having enjoyed multi-platinum success, Earth, Wind Fire had a lot to live up to when the time came for another studio project. And the soul powerhouse didn't let anyone down (either commercially or creatively) on the outstanding Spirit, which boasted hits ranging from the optimistic "On Your Face" and the passionate funk classic "Getaway" to the poetic ballad "Imagination." Philip Bailey is as charismatic as ever on "Imagination" and the gorgeous title song. Maurice White's message and vision (an interesting blend of Afro-American Christianity and Eastern philosophy) was as positive and uplifting as ever, and as always, EWF expressed this positivity without being Pollyanna-ish or corny. And even if one didn't take EWF's calls for unity, hard work, self-respect, and faith in God to heart, they had no problem with their solid grooves. The 2001 CD reissue adds five previously unreleased bonus tracks, including an alternate mix of "Saturday Nite," an "Ange...ls Mix" of "Imagination," "Departure (The Traveler)," and two songs that did not appear on the original album in an alternate form. - Alex Henderson, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Earth, Wind & Fire

Earth, Wind Fire was one of the most musically accomplished, critically acclaimed, and commercially popular funk bands of the '70s. Conceived by drummer, bandleader, songwriter, kalimba player, and occasional vocalist Maurice White, EWF's all-encompassing musical vision used funk as its foundation, but also incorporated jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock roll, psych... Read more
