Spheres is a three-song, 20-minute CD-EP that serves as a taster for Scenic's third album. The disc includes alternate demo versions of two songs that appear on that third album, as well as a third cut that only appears on this EP. Now, as to which exactly of these tracks are the demos and which is the one exclusive to this EP, well, that can't be ascertained, not at the time of release anyway, since the liner notes don't get specific. To make things yet more confusing, the album, according to an accompanying IPR press release, will bear the almost identical title, The Spheres, and "The Spheres" also happens to be the name of a title track on this EP as well. As for the music, "The Spheres" is deep and drony instrumental post-rock, "Lunar Afternoon" is (appropriately, considering the title) thinking person's planetarium music, and "Riding the Arctic Express" is yet chillier ambient space sounds. Ultimately this EP's prime value is as a collector's item, pressed in a limited edition of ...2000 copies and, like all Independent Project releases, boasting exquisite cover design. - Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide Read more Less
